This photograph is part of the “Adria” series taken above the Adriatic coast of Italy between Ravenna and Rimini. With this series, Bernhard Lang won the Sony World Photography Awards in the “Travel” category.
The photograph allows us to discover the beaches from a different angle: the crowds of holiday makers and swimming equipment become colorful and geometric elements and make for very abstract panoramas. Seen from the sky the beach-goers become little dots spread out among the original shapes formed by the beach umbrellas.

Bernhard Lang
Since 2010, Bernhard Lang has been doing aerial photography. He has travelled the world in search of landscapes strongly scarred by man’s imprint, which he photographs from aerial viewpoints using a ultra-light plane or a helicopter. Seen from the sky, these panoramas look almost like abstract paintings. Firmly in the field of contemporary art, his work seeks to incite thoughts on the environment whilst also giving aesthetic pleasure. Over the last ten years, his work has been recompensed by different international awards. “The aerial views show the world out of a different, uncommon perspective. [...] Also, you see the influence, the impact of the humans on the world. That’s what I’d like to show.’’
