About the Item

"I like to go back to a place. Seasons change. Light, which is theater, changes. Nature is tumultuous, and our contact with it makes life happen.” David H. Gibson is a lifelong photographer whose first contact with the medium was in his father's darkroom before he could read. Gibson received a B.A. from Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana, and an M.A. at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. His early work in theater lighting enhanced his photographic education which is largely self-directed. Valley House Gallery has shown his photographs since 1990, just after he had his first solo exhibition at the Eastman Kodak Company in Rochester, New York. Since 1990, Gibson’s work has been featured in Aperture, Hasselblad Forum, Photo Technik International, PHOTOgraphic, and View Camera, and has been the subject of two books. His work took the grand prize at the International Art Competition at Yosemite Museum Gallery in California and been acquired by many museums, including the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, the Ballinglen Foundation in Ireland, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Gibson’s work has been exhibited at the AIPAD Photography Show (Wm. Floyd Gallery, New York), the Amarillo Museum of Art (Texas), the Amon Carter Museum (Fort Worth), the Art in Embassies Program (Dublin, Ireland and Lima, Peru), la Biennale Photographique: Terre Ciel Mer (Montpellier, France), the High Museum of Art (Atlanta), the Houston Museum of Natural Science, The McKinney Avenue Contemporary (Dallas), The Menil Collection (Houston), Photo-Eye Gallery (Santa Fe), the Special Photographers Company (London), and the Tyler Museum of Art (Texas). The price includes an 8-ply rag mat which measures 16 x 20 inches. This is an edition of 25.

Reflections on Eagle Nest Lake "My first trip to Eagle Nest Lake was over 30 years ago. I was captivated by mists rising over the lake and flowing along the floor of the valley. With a background in theater, the unfolding light events immediately commanded my attention. The first photographs were made and I was hooked on Eagle Nest Lake and the opportunities it presented for photography. It has become my custom during an annual August visit to Taos, to begin the day with a drive to Eagle Nest Lake through Taos Canyon and over the pass descending into Moreno Valley. The first glimpse of the valley through the trees reveals the atmospheric conditions for the morning. The valley is 8,300 feet above sea level. This high elevation produces crisp cool mornings with mists often filling the valley. Early on I had no idea that I would be committed to this ethereal place for such a long time. During those first visits, cattle were grazing around the lake and the owners of a ranching operation had allowed lake access for fishermen. I learned later that the lake was formed by a dam built by two ranchers in the early 20th century to impound water of the Cimarron River for irrigation. This created a two thousand acre lake named for the eagles nesting in the area. The lake was stocked and fishermen arrived. The Eagle Nest...
