Edward Burtynsky (b. 1955) is Canada's most successful photographer.
Through masterful technique and frequently dizzying compositions, Burtynsky presents thought-provoking inquiries into the deconstructed territories built from humankind's mining of natural resources.
His images orchestrate a bizarre tension between beauty and desecration, documentary and abstraction. Many works show unbelievable aerial views and are presented with a level of detail normally impossible for the human eye to comprehend.
This work is from one Burtynsky's Quarries series during which he explored marble and granite quarrying in Vermont, Portugal, Italy, and Spain. While the image documents the environmental exploitation, the overall work has an incredible form with rich palette and texture. Cracked, fragmented, and abandoned terrains mirror sharp cubist cuts and geometric abstractions.
Burtynsky has described these quarries as “organic architecture” and “inverted pyramids,” alluding to them as if they were structured voids. The Portugese Iberia quarries represent the culmination of the artist's 15-year search for imagery of architecture turned inside out and upside down.
Burtynsky's work can be found in the permanent collection of countless museums including the National Gallery of Canada, the Guggenheim, TATE Modern (London) and MoMA to mention a few.

Edward Burtynsky
Edward Burtynsky is regarded as one of the world’s most accomplished contemporary photographers. He was born in St. Catharines, Ontario, in 1955 and is based in Toronto. His photographs are included in the collections of over sixty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid; the Tate Modern, London and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, California. Exhibitions include Anthropocene (2018) at the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada (international touring exhibition); Water (2013) at the New Orleans Museum of Art & Contemporary Art Center, New Orleans, (international touring exhibition) and Oil (2009) at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. (touring 2009-2014). Awards and distinctions include the TED Prize, the Governor General's Award in Visual Media Arts, The Outreach award at the Rencontres d’Arles, and the Roloff Beny Book award.
