About the Item
Hello (Ghosts of Route 99) - 2021
Route 99 used to cut right through Bakersfield. The streets were filled with Motels for the weary traveler. In the 1970s the highway was moved, killing this section of town. In some places only the signs remain.
20x20cm,
Edition of 7, plus 2 Artist proofs.
Archival C-Print based on a Polaroid.
Signed on back with Certificate.
Not mounted.
Erin Dougherty was born in San Francisco, raised in Palm Springs. She lived in almost every part of California and Arizona then moved to Florence, Italy for some time before returning to her home State. She received a B.A. in Art from Humboldt State University. Erin is a photographer, collagist and general bon vivant. She has been working with Polaroids for the past 10 years.
Artist Statement
I look for the unexpected. I search for the unusual. I seek to share my view of the world.
I am drawn to Polaroid because of the mysterious, ethereal quality of the finished image. There is a softening of the harsh reality of the world. All my work reflects my mood, my emotions and my general attitude during the time the work is being created. I use art to express the emotions that I am unable to say out loud. That’s not to say that my work is morose, depending on the project or the theme I do try to add a touch of whimsy. At this point in my life I can’t imagine a day where I'm not actively planning or working on my next project.
