About the Item
Holly King creates large format photographic landscapes in her studio with sculptural props and painted backdrops. She is interested in the tension between artifice and constructed realities. The imposing scale of the works allows the viewer to project him/herself into the invented landscapes which hover in the balance between the memory of real places, and nostalgia for an imagined landscape. Holly King was born in Montreal and studied visual arts at Laval University, where she earned her BFA in 1979. She then studied visual art and modern dance at York University, completing her MFA in 1981. She teaches at Concordia. Her photographs have been shown in Canada and internationally, notably at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography organized a traveling show of her works, Landscapes of the Imagination, that was on tour from 1998 to 2002. Her works can be found in many prestigious collections, including those of the Montreal Museum of Contemporary Art, the Musée natonal de beaux-arts du Québec, the Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery in Montreal, the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ottawa, and the Canada Council Arts Bank. She lives in Ayers Cliff and works in Montreal.

Holly King
Holly King is a Canadian contemporary artist, born in Montréal, in 1957. She has a BFA degree from Laval University and an MFA degree in visual art from York University. King currently teaches at Concordia University. Her photographs have been shown in Canada and internationally, most notably at the Montréal Museum of Fine Arts, the Centre Georges Pompidou, in Paris, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, in Taiwan and the Museum of Contemporary Art, in Mexico. The Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography organized a traveling show of her works, “Landscapes of the Imagination," which was on tour from 1998–2002.
