About the Item
Photographer Mitchell Funk looks up at the Met Life and Chrysler Buildings from Grand Central Station. He perfectly designs dark and light areas with golds set against blues. A silhouetted light post with metal signs attached has a fanciful shape and rises in the center of the composition. It simultaneously separates and unifies both of the sun-lit buildings. For a final accent, a jet flies into the perfect spot. Strong lighting from the late afternoon sun ties all the elements together, forming a meticulously designed graphic statement. Mitchell Funk is an abstractionist while being a documentarian.

Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.
