About the Item
A monochromatic winter snow scene in Central Park with a leafless tress raises questions. How can a city with over 8 million people jammed into a small space yield an expansive, unpopulated space? Photographer Mitchell Funk would answer, "know your spots and know your moments". This image is a striking example of graphic simplicity. Through Funk's lens, the leafless tree becomes an abstract pattern punctuated surrounded by empty space. Two semi-silhouetted figures punctuate the scene and give it scale.

Mitchell Funk is a pioneer of color photography. In 1970, he participated in one of the first color photography shows at the Brooklyn Museum titled “Images en Couleur." In 1971, he was included in the visionary books Frontiers of Photography and Color (Life Library of Photography), both published by Time-Life. He has done more than 50 photography magazine covers, including covers for Newsweek and Life.

"Tree on Snowy Hillside" is a black & white landscape photograph measuring 25x36" unframed. All of Rick's photographs are printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art Paper using archival pigment-based inks. There are other edition sizes available, namely 12.25x17" and 7.25x10". Photographs are rolled carefully and shipped in a tube. Framing is optional and quoted separately.
Tree on Snowy Hillside is a fine example of the Japanese philosophy of Ma – the celebration of the space between things. This image of a lone tree was taken at a snow covered golf course in Caledon, Ontario. It was a Gold Medal winner at the 2023 PX3 Prix De La Photographie Paris, France.
