Robert Funk
Hedge Fun - Collins Avenue Miami Beach - Blue

2020

About the Item

Street Art by the Rich. Robert Funk’s photographs of elaborate landscaping redefine what Street Art is. Large blue boxwood balls stand next to a long teal blue boxwood hedge Beautiful landscaping greets visitors as they approach sophisticated residences along Miami's fabled Collins Avenue. Hedge Fun - Collins Avenue Miami Beach has captured an example. Hedge Fun is a series that celebrates the landscaping commissioned by well-heeled homeowners, high-end condos and ritzy commercial establishments. Shrubs, bushes and trees are transformed from organic shapes into manmade graphics. They become stripped of surrounding detail to the point that they become abstract in their impact. On any given day in South Florida, there is an army of landscaping trucks with gardeners and groundsmen working meticulously to beautify the streetscape. I am interpreting their creations with the camera. Before there were Robert Smithson, Richard Long, Carl Andre and Donald Judd there were artists that preceded them in making minimalist earthworks sculpture. They are been around for millennia. In recent times, there are referred to as Landscapers. Their material of choice is living plants. More specifically Boxwood but also Privet, Hawthorn, Beech, Yew, Leyland Cypress, Hemlock, Arborvitae, Barberry, Holly, Oleander, and Lavender. I salute them all and the living art they make and cultivate. Shot with a Hi-res 36 megapixel camera which yields beautiful detail. Robert Funk is a photographer and New York advertising art director for Print and TV. He was widely published in the 1970's and 1980's. Signed, dated and numbered 2/15 recto, unframed, other sizes available, Printed on Hahnemühle Fine Art paper
