MODERN STYLE

The first decades of the 20th century were a period of artistic upheaval, with modern art movements including Cubism, Surrealism, Futurism and Dadaism questioning centuries of traditional views of what art should be. Using abstraction, experimental forms and interdisciplinary techniques, painters, sculptors, photographers, printmakers and performance artists all pushed the boundaries of creative expression.

Major exhibitions, like the 1913 Armory Show in New York City — also known as the “International Exhibition of Modern Art,” in which works like the radically angular Nude Descending a Staircase by Marcel Duchamp caused a sensation — challenged the perspective of viewers and critics and heralded the arrival of modern art in the United States. But the movement’s revolutionary spirit took shape in the 19th century.

The Industrial Revolution, which ushered in new technology and cultural conditions across the world, transformed art from something mostly commissioned by the wealthy or the church to work that responded to personal experiences. The Impressionist style emerged in 1860s France with artists like Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne and Edgar Degas quickly painting works that captured moments of light and urban life. Around the same time in England, the Pre-Raphaelites, like Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, borrowed from late medieval and early Renaissance art to imbue their art with symbolism and modern ideas of beauty.

Emerging from this disruption of the artistic status quo, modern art went further in rejecting conventions and embracing innovation. The bold legacy of leading modern artists Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Salvador Dalí, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Marc Chagall, Piet Mondrian and many others continues to inform visual culture today.

George Tooker, Paul Cadmus, Monroe Wheeler, and George Platt Lynes on a Beach
Located in London, GB
Silver gelatin print, with numeric notation and stamp of collection of Jon Anderson (verso), 12cm x 18cm (41cm x 44cm framed). Jon Anderson was Paul Cadmus' partner of 35 years. The picture depicts the artists Paul Cadmus and George Tooker, the photographer, George Platt Lynes, and publisher, Monroe Wheeler. The painter Paul Cadmus (1904 - 1999) and married artists Jared (1902 - 1989) and Margaret French (1906 - 1998) comprise the photographic collaborative known by their acronym, PaJaMa. Beginning in 1937, and over the course of nearly two decades, the trio collectively staged photographs set against the backdrops of Fire Island, Provincetown, and Nantucket, among other locations. Their psychologically and sexually charged images often served as studies for the artists' subsequent paintings and works on paper. The statuesque quality of the figures and the stillness of each scenario are key characteristics of PaJaMa’s photographs...

Photograph of Nude Marilyn Monroe Pose 2
By Tom Kelly
Located in Houston, TX
Black and white photograph of a nude Marilyn Monroe taken by Tom Kelly in 1949. The work was distributed as calender art and one was featured in an issue of Playboy magazine in 1953. The photograph is not framed. Artist Biography: Kelley was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He learned photography as an apprentice in a New York photo studio, and then worked for the Associated Press and Town & Country magazine. After coming to California in 1935, Kelley established a photography studio in Hollywood and produced promotional photographs of motion picture stars. David O. Selznick and Samuel Goldwyn retained Kelley to take promotional photos of their stars and starlets for magazine covers and advertising. Later, Kelley's business shifted to commercial and advertising photography. Some of Kelley's most famous photo subjects have included Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, James Cagney, Clark Gable, Winston Churchill, Bob Hope, Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford, Jack Benny, David Bowie, John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Yma Sumac and, of course, Marilyn Monroe, with and without clothes. Tom Kelley had a way of making his subjects feel comfortable behind the camera. He would bring his wife with him to his shoots to create a more soothing and relaxed atmosphere. Kelley served on the panel of judges at the Miss Universe...

Orpheus #1 - Balanchine Ballet with Francisco Moncion and Nicholas Magallanes
Located in Glenford, NY
George Platt Lynes 1950 Photograph #1 of Balanchine Ballet ‘Orpheus’. George Platt Lynes rare original vintage 1950 silver gelatin photograph of nude dancers Francisco Moncion and Nicholas Magallanes in George Balanchine's iconic mid-20th Century ballet Orpheus. Stamped on verso in dark blue ink at upper center, "GEORGE PLATT LYNES/145 EAST 52 STREET NEW YORK”. Photo shoot took place in NYC on March 21, 1950. Costumes and Set by ISAMU NAGUCHI. Photo is 7 5/8 x 9 1/4 inches, soft satin finish in excellent condition. This photograph is one from a collection of 14 different poses in this series of nude photographs of Moncion and Magallanes in Orpheus by Platt Lynes. Complete collection is available on request. Photographs from this celebrated series are in the 20th Century collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), Museum of Modern Art (MOMA, NYC), and the Columbus Museum. George Platt Lynes (1907–1955), was a gregarious American portrait, dance, fashion, and male nude photographer whose career spanned the late 1920s through the early 1950s. From age eighteen, Lynes entered the cosmopolitan world of the American expatriate community in Paris when he became acquainted with the salon of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. He began photographing authors like Stein, Jean Cocteau, André Gide, and Colette and soon established himself as one of the premier fashion photographers in the Condé Nast stable, documenting the ballet companies of George Balanchine/Lincoln Kirstein, and pursuing a private obsession with seductive images of young male nudes rarely published in his lifetime. Orpheus represents a major 20th Century artistic collaboration between composer Igor Stravinsky, choreographer George Ballanchine, and artist/designer Isamu Naguchi. Orpheus is a thirty-minute neoclassical ballet composed by Igor Stravinsky in collaboration with choreographer George Balanchine in Hollywood, California in 1947. The work was commissioned by Ballet Society, later renamed New York City Ballet, which Balanchine founded with Lincoln Kirstein. Sets and costumes were created by Isamu Noguchi. Noguchi’s lyre harp from the production became the symbol of the New York City Ballet. Francisco Moncion (July 6, 1918 – April 1, 1995) was a charter member of the New York City Ballet. Over the course of his forty year career, choreographers George Balanchine, and Jerome Robbins in the New York City Ballet created 22 major roles for Moncion including the Dark Angel...

The Bathing Suit
Located in Morongo Valley, CA
Digital color print on Pearl photo paper, based on original Impossible film, Edition 1/10, Signed on the back with Certificate, not mounted Whether in color and black and white, van Driessche’s photos marry the atmospheric qualities of integral and instant pack films with the sensuality of his models. The effect is often painterly, intimate, delicate. The softness and vulnerability of the nude feminine form is often juxtaposed with untamed landscapes or graphic urban architecture. Other photos in the series read like fine art paintings, with luminous colors and classic compositions. Van Driessche has traveled all over the world, taking photos wherever he goes. These days, he often schedules photo shoots with models when he travels, working with both professionals and amateurs. Despite being a perfectionist in his photography, van Driessche likes the unpredictable nature of expired film. He embraces its inherent perfections. He says it is thrilling when an instant photo develops before your eyes, and it happens to be exactly what you were hoping for. And equally frustrating when, for whatever reason, the photo just doesn’t work. He says that you have to be very sure of everything, the composition, the lighting, the poses, before pushing the button. Instant photography requires more thought and more patience than other forms of photography, but the rewards are worth the effort. His work has been widely featured, having appeared in Dreck Magazine, Tata Magazine, 100 Volume 1, Latent Magazine, Hylas Magazine, and Fine Art Photo Magazine. He has been interviewed by the on-line magazines Whataroll and Kaltblut and he recently participated in a group exhibition at the Brick Lane Gallery in London in March 2017. Van Driessche cites these photographers as his influences: Anton Corbjin, for his square format and black and white images; Helmut Newton for his nudes; Stephanie Schneider...
