Fusing the real with the surreal permeating the everyday life in isolation with a sense of mystery. Or, doing my travelling in between my ears.
The 'Couchsurfing Series' comprises the four works below and is part of a project that took place in June 2020, during the London Lockdown. 'On Vacation, June 2020'
Inspired by a DNA study revealing that Aboriginal Australians have been genetically isolated from the rest of humanity for 50,000 years with no direct evidence that they had ever intermarried with South-East Asians. A deep indigenous genetic history tracing all the way back to the initial settlement of the continent 50,000 years ago. A most unique heritage.

Cristina Schek is the photosensitive kind. She thinks in pictures; her imagination is always in focus. A Transylvanian Surrealist now rooted in London, Schek crafts conceptual work that explores identity and the nature of representation, with literature, films, and art history as her muses. Her true passion lies in storytelling—venturing into the unknown, layering, and crafting images into creative compositions.
Esteemed art critic Estelle Lovatt, FRSA, notes the departure from traditional representations in Cristina's work: “Away from the worn-out out-of-date academic portrait of the female muse, Cristina Schek’s attention-grabbing images are inspired by literature and history. Schek's portfolio is celebrated on a global scale, highlighted by prestigious exhibitions and art fairs such as the London Art Fair, Art Miami, NY Art Fair, LA Art Show. Her notable achievements include Young Masters Focus On The Female Art Created During Lockdown Award 2021 for her work 'Florence Lightingale', receiving recognition at Phillips Auction House with the BFAMI Art Exhibition 2022 and winning the W4 Fourth Plinth with 'The Ceiling In The Sky' monumental 4x4m public art installation in 2023. This prestigious recognition follows in the footsteps of Sir Peter Blake, whose artwork was the inaugural work on display.

Cristina Schek
Cristina Schek is the ‘photo-sensitive’ kind. She thinks in pictures; her imagination is always in focus. A Transylvanian living in London, she creates conceptual portraits exploring identity and the nature of representation using literature, films, and art history as inspiration. She usually works as her own model and has captured herself in a range of guises and personas which are often whimsical and a touch romantic, employing amusing and impactful visual puns. Completely self-taught in photography and far removed from traditional or documentary styles, the camera is merely a tool for Cristina. Her greatest passion is storytelling and following her curiosity into the unknown, enjoying the freedom of layering and manipulating her photographs into creative montages. She trusts her instinct for matching the raw material with the suggestive imaginings of her subconscious. Her photographs are given subtle alterations in a digital process that often takes months, resulting in carefully constructed compositions, which reveal the influence of the great Surrealists and Old Masters.
