Increasingly heralded for his influence, Slim Aarons (1916-2006) made a career out of photographing "attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places." Aarons is known for his iconic images of Hollywood glamour and luxurious people, places and lifestyles.
Undercurrent Projects offers premium quality photographic prints from the Slim Aarons Archive, owned and housed by Getty Images. All photographs are printed and authorized by the Getty Images Gallery, London. Photographs are printed utilizing the original transparency held at the archive source.
Aarons began his career as a combat photographer in World War II. Though he earned a Purple Heart for his service, he declared that combat had taught him that the only beach worth landing on was decorated with beautiful people enjoying themselves in the sun.
Slim Aarons is noted for his documentation of the Beautiful People over 50 years, encompassing high society, celebrity, aristocracy, and the jet set. He was born and raised in New York City and New Jersey and later New Hampshire. He took up photography as a teenager. At the age of eighteen, he enlisted in the U. S. Army and was later appointed official photographer at the United States Military Academy at West Point. During World War II he served as an army combat photographer for Yank magazine in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. After the war he became a freelance photojournalist, first based in Hollywood, then Rome, then New York. His photographs appeared in many magazines, including Life, Holiday, Town & Country, Look, Venture, and Travel & Leisure. His first book A Wonderful Time (1974) is considered a classic.

Quentin Shih (Xiaofan Shi )时晓凡 born in Tianjin, China in 1975, lives and works as both a camera artist (still photo) and filmmaker between New York and Beijing. This is from a series titled La Habana (Havana, Cuba) "In the year 2012, I photographed some young people in Havana, placing them in the streets at night or in studios with colored backdrops. We were both inquisitive of the other, wondering what exactly we were doing together. Were they acting in front of my camera? Or was I directing them to achieve the image that I wanted? A camera can serve a documentary purpose but it can also embellish and create. I called this series La Habana in Waiting. It was about a kind of result - a result that all my subjects and I were waiting for - a result which is achieved through a camera lens and is called ‘photography’."
A self-taught photographer, he began to shoot photos in college for local underground musicians and artists. After graduation, he came to Beijing to develop his career as a professional photographer/artist. From 2000 to 2002, he participated in exhibitions in China and America with his fine art photographic works and his works have been collected by American museums, such as the Danforth Museum of Art and the Worcester Art Museum.
During the last few years, he has been producing work for top commercial clients and international publications such as Adidas, Microsoft, Sony, Siemens, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar and Esquire. His advertising campaigns work have won numerous prestigious international advertising and photograph awards.
In 2007, Quentin was named 'Photographer of the Year' by Esquire Magazine (China). In the following years, he joined lots group exhibitions and solo exhibitions in China, Europe, Southeast Asia and United States.
As one of the leading Chinese photographers, Quentin Shih is well recognized for his individual artistic style which utilizes vast sets and dramatic lighting to engage in emotional narratives. Now, he is returning to his roots in fine art photography and challenging its techniques and concepts into his commercial and fashion photography in order to achieve a unique symbiosis.
At the same time, he is also working on his film projects, A Parisian Movie (2011) was his first short movie shot in Paris, France.

Tony recalls - I got a call from Jill Furmanovsky saying she’d double booked herself. She had been booked to photograph Bruce Springsteen at Wembley, and some unknown guy at a small venue in The Strand. “She said she would go to the Wembley and asked me to go to photo the other gig. Well it turned out to be Prince at his first ever gig in the UK. Back then nobody was too sure about Prince’s sexuality so I went along to The Strand and assumed he’d be playing at Heaven – a gay venue. I got there, but my name wasn’t on the door which wasn’t too unusual. I talked the security guard around to let me in saying I had to photo this performer who was about to go on stage inside. Over the course of a career lasting half a century, Slim Aarons (1916-2006) portrayed high society, aristocracy, authors, artists, business icons, the celebrated and their milieu. In doing so, he captured a golden age of wealth, privilege, beauty and leisure that occurred alongside—but quite separate from—the cultural and political backdrop of the second half of the Twentieth Century.
The Slim Aarons Estate has released the limited Estate edition as a Lambda print, which is a modern c-type prints. They have chosen Lambda prints for their sharpness, clarity, colour saturation and quality, compared to archival inkjet prints. Lambda printing gives true continuous tone.
