James Dean Looking Downward - black and white photograph by Roy Schatt Artwork details: Roy Schatt (1909-2002) James Dean Looking Downward 1954/printed later Signed in pencil, l.r. Gelatin silver print 20 x 16 inches, sheet 18 x 14 inches, image Roy Schatt was born in New York in 1909. He was first trained as a painter studying with N.C. Wyeth. He went on to take classes at the Art Students League and later the Corcoran School of Art. He then earned a living as a commercial illustrator working for Warner Bros. In his mid-20s, Schatt began experimenting with photography. In the 1930s, Schatt created murals under the “New Deal” program as part of the WPA. In the early 1940s, he served in the US Army. By the late 1940s and early 1950s, Schatt shifted his interest primarily to photography, being named by Lee Strasberg as the Official Photographer at The Actors Studio.
