The Good Dishes integrates memory, legacy, and metaphor with my response to loss. As I witnessed an early generation of family members pass, my cousins and I were each faced with the emotional task of cleaning out the family home. Sorting through the heirlooms, we would determine which items to toss, sell, or preserve. Without fail, when it came to the family’s fine china, that item was always given to the person who most cherished its memory and sentimental value.
Growing up in a large Italian family, everything was centered around food and the family table. I remember vividly my mother’s vintage marigold stoneware dishes that she bought at the grocery store back in the early 1970s. In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of everyday life in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This seaside still life of deep blue and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a concrete surface in front of a cream colored plaster wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects.

Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior...

Born in 1957 at Kalamazoo and raised in Detroit, MI, Tom Ferguson has photographed still lifes, flowers, botanicals, collage, city-scapes and landscapes. He works in platinum, palladium, cyanotype, gum, silver gelatin and other alternative processes. He is also a fine commercial photographer. This is similar in feel to Karl Blossfeldt and Irving Penn.
He moved to Los Angeles in 1976, and currently lives in Simi Valley.
