About the Item
Sepia-tone still life photograph of a fern forest
pigment print on watercolor paper, signed and editioned
The photograph is unframed and made to order (print lead time is typically 2 weeks)
10. 1 x 20 inch image on 16.1 x 26 inch watercolor paper
Photography is generally thought of as the medium that most directly engages with the real, but James Bleecker uses his lens to transform his subjects — whether ferns, landscapes or metropolitan structures — into impossibly pristine archetypes of themselves. Such is the case with "Ferns No. 2." The flora dances with soft light, which is exaggerated by the sepia tone of Bleecker's prints. Patterned like a textile yet "rigorously composed" (to borrow the words of Edgar Munhall, Curator Emeritus of The Frick Collection), this pigment print on watercolor paper strikes a balance between the subtlety inherent to a nature scene and the grandiosity of a large photographic print.
About the artist: James Bleecker photographs the landscapes and architecture of the Hudson River Valley. He has received commissions from the Albany Institute of History and Art, Historic Hudson Valley, the Rockefeller family foundations, The Frick Collection, the American Museum of Natural History, and The Morgan Library.
Note: The install view of the framed print is an example. Prints are made to order through the terminus of each edition and do not come framed.

Ian Sanderson (born 1951 Scotland, died 2020 Spain) was a Scottish photographer.
He produced images over a 35 year career, and in recent years used archival techniques to produce his prints.
For most of his career he worked as both a Commercial and Fine Art photographer, and during his last years concentrated on his personal imagery.
Towards the end of his life journey, Ian was reviving with his partner two 19th century printing techniques in their studio, Platinum Palladium and Gum Bichromate ( one-of-a-kind pieces). This culminated in a large retrospective exhibition in Barcelona which was sponsored by the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation.
The Platinum and Palladium prints are particularly interesting as they printed them onto vellum paper therefore transparent and bonded pure gold or silver to the back of the prints ( every print is therefore a unique and timeless piece of art).
They have created rare and personalized pieces with an artisanal technique.
Ian Sanderson was one of only a handful of artists worldwide producing this type of work.
Nowadays, Ian’s partner continues their work, she’s still creating Platinum Palladium prints but also silver gelatin photographs.
