About the Item

Sharon Core photographically enacts twelve early food paintings by Bay Area artist Wayne Thiebaud. Her meticulous contructions of cakes, pies, hotdogs, etc. in “edible live arrangements for the camera” are a mimetic homage. Based on various catalog reproductions and her own memories, each photograph is printed the size of the original painting. Sharon inverts the common practice of making a painting from a photograph. The resulting work refers simultaneously to painterly illusionism and photographic reality, causing a flutter in the mind as it struggles with seeing the familiar anew. Thiebaud is said to have painted many of his early iconic still life’s of American food from memory. In a quote from “Pop Art,” by Lucy Lippard, Thiebaud states, “I am interested in what happens when the relationship between paint and subject matter comes as close as I can get it – white, gooey, shiny, sticky oil paint spread out on top of a painted cake to ‘become’ frosting. It is playing with reality – making agn illusion which grows out of an exploration of the propensities of materials.” Sharon Core was born in New Orleans in 1965. She holds a BFA in painting from the University of Georgia and an MFA in Photography from Yale University. Her work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Guggenheim Museum, J. Paul Getty Museum, Yale University Art Gallery, Princeton Art Museum, Cleveland Museum of Art, and Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, among others.
