About the Item

'Primary Colors' (Stranger than Paradise) - 2001 each 20x20cm plus 5 cm in between each print together, 70x70cm, sold out Edition of 10, Artist Proof 2/2, Archival C-Print print, based on the Polaroids, Certificate and Signature label artist Inventory No. 313.20 Not mounted Stefanie Schneider: A German View of the American West The works of Stefanie Schneider evoke Ed Ruscha's obsession with the American experience, the richness of Georgia O'Keeffe's deserts, and the loneliness of Edward Hopper's haunting paintings. Her vision is cinematic yet intimate, infused with the hazy glow of nostalgia and the raw edges of reality. With her signature use of expired Polaroid film, Schneider captures not just images but feelings—fragments of time slipping through our fingers, narratives left open-ended like a half-forgotten dream. Among her many striking works, Primary Colors (2001) stands as a meditation on identity, perception, and the myths that shape the American consciousness. Part of her Stranger than Paradise series, Primary Colors consists of nine individual photographs of an American flag fluttering in the wind, arranged in a grid of three rows by three. Each image captures a unique moment—subtle variations in movement, light, and form—yet together, they create a powerful and unified statement. The flag, often seen as a fixed emblem of national pride, is rendered fluid and ephemeral through Schneider’s lens. The undulating fabric, shifting in the wind, speaks to the ever-changing nature of identity and belonging. The soft focus lends the series a dreamlike, almost ghostly quality, as if memory and history are colliding in a fleeting instant. As the title suggests, Primary Colors draws attention to the bold red, white, and blue hues that define the American flag. But beyond its palette, the work prompts deeper contemplation. What does the flag represent in different contexts, in different eyes? Is it a symbol of unity or division, hope or disillusionment? Schneider’s choice to fragment and repeat the image highlights these tensions, allowing for a nuanced dialogue about patriotism and the ideals it embodies. Stefanie Schneider’s Primary Colors is not a conventional tribute to American symbolism. It is neither reverent nor rebellious; instead, it lingers in the in-between space, where meaning is shaped by the viewer's own experience. Like much of her work, it is open-ended, inviting us to reflect on the fluidity of identity, the power of symbols, and the narratives we construct about the places we call home.

Edition of 5 Colleen Fitzgerald's series, "Stamina," provides new approaches to conventional subjects by utilizing the materials and tools of photography in non-traditional ways. A unique physical process combines aspects of sculpture and photography, subverting the idealized two-dimensional photograph and providing a new entry point to the enduring photographic subjects of natural landscapes, seascapes, and more. To create the photographs, unexposed large sheets of positive film are cut and bent into three dimensional shapes before being exposed inside a camera outfitted with a custom film holder that accepts the film as a three-dimensional object instead of as a standard, flat sheet. The results on the shaped film can...
