About the Item

Compared with his peers, the original Abstract Expressionist posse (Arshile Gorky, Hans Hoffmann, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko) Adolph Gottlieb arguably created the most easily recognizable paintings. His signature forms include bursts, circles and "labyrinths" - while they appear to be expressionist forms they are often highly symbolic and inspired by primitive art. While they are the result of gestural painting, they also posses a calm and almost contemplative energy that is often at odds with the work of Gorky, Hoffmann and Pollock (whose canvases can be heavy with angst, aggression and torment) This iconic screenprint combines two of Gottlieb's most famous forms: the disc and the starburst in a uniquely dark combination, adding to the mystique of his abstract language. As Gottlieb's paintings are selling for upwards of two million, his fine screenprints are a must have for the young collector passionate about American Abstract Expressionism.
