About the Item
Matisse once said, "The paper cutout allows me to draw in the color. Instead of drawing the outline and putting the color inside it, I draw straight into the color." The hues he used were so strong that his doctors advised him to wear dark glasses because they could affect his vision. This lithographic poster was printed in six colors for an exhibition of the Atelier Mourlot lithographs at the Seibu Department Store in 1984. It is a reproduction of the poster used for the Mourlot centennial exhibition in 1952.

About the Artist:
(1869-1954) French
Matisse studied in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and became a student of William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Gustave Moreau. Regarded as the leader of the Fauvist movement, Matisse pursued the expressiveness of color throughout his career, and by 1917, he celebration of color reached its peak when he began to spend time on the French Riviera.

Henri Matisse was born on December 31, 1869, in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France. At 22, he had given up studying law in Paris to pursue painting. He had briefly studied art at the Académie Julian and Ecole des Beaux-Arts with Gustave Moreau. At 32, Matisse exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, where he met Maurice de Vlaminck, who with Matisse would eventually lead the Fauve art movement. Matisse's work was included in the 1913 Armory Show in New York, and throughout the 1910s and into the 1920s, his work began to find collectors around the world. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, he divided his time between Paris and southern France, producing paintings, sculpture, lithographs, and etchings. Like many avant-garde artists in Paris, Matisse was receptive to a broad range of influences, particularly 'primitive' art, Near Eastern decorative art, African masks and sculpture, impressionist color, cubism, and the paintings of Paul Cezanne. The artist's images of the human face and figure -rendered in fluid lines and flat fields of color- typify these influences. Matisse argued for the prominence of instinct in art production, believing that an artist should not have complete control over color and form. He died on November 3, 1954, in Nice.

He was influenced by Oriental art.Jack Coutu was born Raymond John Coutu at Farnham, Surrey, England, and was educated at Farnham Grammar School.[ On leaving school in 1940, he worked at Abbott of Farnham, a coachbuilding company in Farnham, where his father Bert Coutu was also employed painting coats of arms and heraldic shields. Coutu taught printmaking at the Central School of Art from 1957 to 1965 and then at the West Surrey College of Art and Design in Farnham from 1965 to 1985. In 1968, he started to carve netsuke (as practised in Japan) and he joined the Netsuke Kenkyukai Society, based in the United StatesHe is also a member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and the Printmakers Council.
