Alistair Grant was a great and justly-revered experimental British printmaker. He worked in the printmaking department of the Royal College for 35 years (1955 -90), acting as Head of Department 1970 -90 and as Professor of Printmaking (Emeritus) 1984 -90. He retired to pursue his love of painting. He also co-authored an important book on the life and works of fellow English artist Henry Moore, whom his abstract figurative style resembles. Mr. Grant died suddenly in 1997.
These prints are from the late 1960s and show the strong influence of figurative abstraction and surrealist elements in Grant's work. The shapes he uses become a visual vocabulary and are ciphers of existing forms - organized on strongly colored backgrounds which allows them to be read as landscapes. This approach to describing a sense of place finds echoes in the St. Ives artists though Grant's work have their own unique character.

Alistair Grant
Alistair Grant was a printmaker, painter and illustrator. He was born in Kensington, London. His mother was from Etaples in Northern France: Grant retained the family home here and the region inspired his work throughout his life. From 1941-43 he studied at Birmingham College of Art, before being conscripted into the Royal Air Force. He subsequently studied at the Royal College of Art, where he was appointed Head of Printmaking in 1970 and Professor in 1984. Grant was involved in the production of several UK films, including The Portrait of Dorian Gray and The Battle of Agincourt. After retiring from the Royal College, Grant focused on his work, exhibiting both in England and France and spending his time between London, Etaples and Paris.

After completing his studies at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in 1947, Pierre Alechinsky immediately became one of the founders and most active members of the CoBrA group . He began working with other members 'four-handed', especially with Appel and Dotremont, producing oil paintings filled with a multitude of small figures; his taste for ironical titles and curved lines was already becoming evident.
After Cobra disbanded, Alechinsky moved to Paris where he studied printmaking and moved in Surrealist circles. His work contains residual figurative motifs, such as goblins, reptiles of every description, volcanoes, and rushing streams. The beasts and geographical elements arouse disquiet as well as smiles of complicity.
