About the Artist: Andre Derain (1880–1954) was a French painter, printmaker, sculptor, and one of the founding fathers of Fauvism whose radical use of pure color and simplified form redefined modern art in the early twentieth century. Born in Chatou, near Paris, Derain initially studied engineering before turning to painting, where his collaboration with Henri Matisse and Maurice de Vlaminck ignited a revolution in color and expression.
