About the Publication:
Andre Lanskoy, Peintres d'aujourd'hui (Andre Lanskoy, Painters of Today), published in Paris in 1960 by Fernand Hazan, Editeur, stands as one of the most distinguished albums in the celebrated Peintres d'aujourd'hui series. Dedicated to presenting the foremost modern artists of the mid-20th century, the publication unites critical scholarship and the finest Parisian craftsmanship in fine art printmaking. Produced under the technical supervision of Cliches Union and Bussierre et Nouel and printed by l'Imprimerie Lecot, the heliogravures demonstrate exceptional tonal fidelity and chromatic refinement, reflecting Hazan’s commitment to preserving the visual and material essence of modern painting. The album’s design, typography, and binding—realized by l'Imprimerie Damien and F.I.A.P. following the models of Marcel Jacno—exemplify the harmonious synthesis of art, design, and scholarship that characterized the Hazan editions. As a testament to the intellectual and aesthetic ambitions of the Peintres d'aujourd'hui series, the 1960 Lanskoy volume endures as an important contribution to postwar art publishing, showcasing the intersection of technical precision, curatorial vision, and the Parisian tradition of fine art printing that elevated the artist’s work into a collectible art form.
About the Artist:
Andre Lanskoy (1902–1976) was a Russian-born French painter, printmaker, and illustrator whose poetic vision and mastery of color made him one of the central figures of the School of Paris and a pivotal voice in the evolution of lyrical abstraction. Born in Moscow and shaped by the turbulence of early 20th-century Russia, he emigrated to Paris in 1921, immersing himself in the city’s thriving avant-garde scene alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray. Deeply influenced by Kandinsky’s spiritual abstraction, Matisse’s chromatic harmony, and the emotive structure of Russian iconography, Lanskoy developed a personal visual language defined by vibrant, interlocking color fields and rhythmic brushwork that conveyed emotion, energy, and movement. After beginning his career with expressive figurative works, he transitioned fully to abstraction in the late 1940s, creating paintings that function as visual symphonies—compositions of color and light that evoke musical cadence and meditative balance. A key member of the Nouvelle Ecole de Paris, Lanskoy exhibited alongside Nicolas de Stael, Serge Poliakoff, Jean-Michel Coulon, and Hans Hartung, contributing to the rebirth of abstract painting in postwar Europe. His lyrical use of color and intuitive sense of rhythm influenced later artists such as Pierre Soulages, Olivier Debre, and Jean Messagier, and his paintings are held in major international museums including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Musee d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Tate Modern in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Lanskoy’s art continues to resonate for its fusion of structure and spontaneity, embodying a belief that abstraction could express the inner music of the soul. His highest auction record was achieved at Sotheby’s, London, in February 2014, when Composition sold for approximately $1.3 million USD, affirming his enduring legacy as one of the great lyrical abstractionists of the 20th century.
