Derrière le miroir:
In October 1945 the French art dealer Aimé Maeght opens his art gallery at 13 Rue de Téhéran in Paris. His beginning coincides with the end of Second World War and the return of a number of exiled artists back to France.
The publication was created in October 1946 (n°1) and published without interruption until 1982 (n°253). Its original articles and illustrations (mainly original color lithographs by the gallery artists) who were famous at the time.
The lithographic publication covered only the artists exhibited by Maeght gallery either through personal or group exhibitions. Among them were, Pierre Alechinsky, Francis Bacon, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, Eduardo Chillida, Alberto Giacometti, Vassily Kandinsky, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Léger, Henri Matisse, Joan Miró, Saul Steinberg and Antoni Tapies.
Antoni Tàpies was a Spanish artist known for his mixed-media paintings that incorporated marble dust, found objects, and resin as seen in his seminal work Grey and Green Painting (1957). Social themes run throughout his highly textured and tactile paintings, which were influenced by his experience of the politics and environment of the wartime and the postwar state of the Spanish government. “If one draws things in a manner which provides only the barest clue to their meaning, the viewer is forced to fill in the gaps by using his own imagination,” he reflected. “He is compelled to participate in the creative act, which I consider very important.” Born on December 13, 1923 in Barcelona, Spain, he originally studied law while pursuing art, he became a friend of his fellow Catalan Joan Miró who was an integral influence on Tàpies’s early Surrealist work. Incorporating the scrawling marks of Paul Klee, Tàpies joined the Art Informel movement, as his work turned toward the abstract and seemingly anticipated the Arte Povera movement. Over the several decades to follow, the artist became more nuanced in his choice of materials and attempted to convey the accidental marks of walls and graffiti. He died on February 6, 2012 in Barcelona, Spain. Today, his works are held in the Fundació Antoni Tàpies Museum in Barcelona, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London, and the Reina Sofia National Museum in Madrid, among others.

Antoni Tàpies
Antoni Tàpies is considered to be Spain's most important painter after Picasso. His work is in the collections of the most important modern and contemporary museums around the world, as well as those of the most notable private collectors. Tàpies’s ultra-typical style was an almost industrial look, expressionistic slashes, thick impasto, rough and impassioned.

Antoni Tàpies:
In his wide-ranging practice, Antoni Tàpies combined rich conceptual concerns with material experimentation and monumental scales. His work was variously informed by early modernists including Paul Klee and Joan Miró and by Art Informel artists, such as Jean Dubuffet, who were his contemporaries. Throughout his paintings, prints, sculptures, and works on paper, Tàpies built a visual language full of thick, impastoed gestural marks and a cosmology of symbols and scripts. His materials ranged from trash and earth to dust and stone, which created a sense of solidity and physicality throughout his oeuvre. Tàpies participated in the Venice Biennale four times and exhibited in cities including Paris, London, Barcelona, Brussels, Berlin, Tokyo, Zürich, and New York. His work has sold for seven figures at auction and belongs in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, Moderna Museet, the Kunstmuseum Basel, the Fondation Beyeler, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Tate.

Antoni Tàpies
Over the course of his career in painting, printmaking, and etching, Antoni Tàpies (Spanish 1923-2012) has created his own visual language of symbols and marks to help communicate the broad range of influences in his work including, most significantly, his Catalan roots, as well as his involvement with the Parisian intellectual scene of the 1950s, meeting exponents of Art informel like Jean Fautrier and Jean Dubuffet. Tàpies’s abstract paintings are made with expressive blends of impasto, gestural brush strokes, often backwards hand-written script, and common materials such as soil and marble dust.
