About the Item
Cécile Reims (French, 1927–2020)
Cécile Reims’s work is distinguished by its masterful technique, intricate detail, and deep engagement with themes of transformation and the natural world. A renowned engraver, she collaborated with leading artists while also developing a striking personal body of work. Her meticulously rendered compositions often explore organic forms, cycles of life and decay, and the delicate interplay between the real and the surreal. Reims’s practice was shaped by her experiences of displacement and survival, infusing her work with a quiet yet profound sense of resilience. Though often working in the service of others' visions, her own engravings reveal a singular voice—one that speaks to the fragility and endurance of life itself.

In the years following the war, she turned her focus to the arts, becoming a master engraver known for her extraordinary precision and technical skill. Though she frequently worked in service of others’ visions, her own compositions reveal a singular imagination—one attuned to transformation, fragility, and the strange beauty of the natural world.
