About the Item

Cheung Yee 張義 (b. 1936) Born in Guangzhou, China, Cheung Yee graduated from the Fine Art Department of Taiwan Normal University in 1958, and five years later he formed the Circle Group with other local artists in Taiwan. In 1965, Cheung received a grant to travel the USA and Europe, exploring the discovering Western artists and their key influences and practices. Hong Kong- born Cheung Yee, a renowned sculptor and painter now residing in the U.S, is famous for being the first Chinese sculptor to create a modernised adaptation of ancient Chinese elements, inspired from western art forms, and presenting his intriguing, new-world take on Asian ancestral cultural codes to a Western audience. Most renowned for his cast paper murals developed in the 1970s, Cheung Yee is widely regarded as the pioneer of the contemporary art movement in Hong Kong. His artistic innovation and contributions have also won him The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Member class (MBE) in 1979 conferred by the Queen of England. With over a hundred exhibitions organised world wide since he started his career, Cheung holds the record as the only living artist in the history of Hong Kong to have been specially invited to exhibit three solo-exhibitions at the prestigious Hong Kong Museum of Art. Cheung was a professor of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong until 1998, the chairman of the Hong Kong Sculptors’ Association, as well as advisor to the Hong Kong Museum of Art. Today he continues to create masterful artworks from his home in California, U.S.A. Possessing a rare perception in art, his works reflect elements from a myriad of subjects including early American art, Egyptian art, ancient Chinese philosophy, geomancy, among various others; all of which are uniquely interpreted to result in works that are evidently distinct. Archaic touches from the East, like a profound Chinese poem from the distant past or cryptic primitive symbols from a forgotten time, are delicately blended into his cast paper works. Four Spirits & the Sanfuhuangtu An interesting theme that Cheung’s art projects is the Sanfuhuangtu 《三辅黄图》 (Annotations on the Rule of the Yellow Emperor). This ancient literary text is propelled to life by his individualistic bronze sculptural works which express the xuanwu 玄武, represented by the combined form of the tortoise and the snake. Consequently, a keen observer may notice that a number of his sculptures such as the Magic Nine and Four Spirits show spatial openings, symbolic of the tortoise shell, and worm-like figures, representative of the snake. Born and raised in New York City, Mazur attended the Horace Mann School. He received a bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1958, then studied art at Yale. Mazur first gained notice for his series of lithographs and etchings of inmates in a mental asylum, which resulted in two publications, "Closed Ward" and "Locked Ward." Over the years, he worked in printmaking and painting. His series of large-scale prints for Dante's Inferno won critical acclaim, and were the subject of a traveling exhibition organized by the University of Iowa in 1994. Later he concentrated on creating large, lyrical paintings which make use of his free, gestural brushwork and a varied palette. Some of these paintings were seen in an exhibition of 2002 at Boston University, "Looking East: Brice Marden, Michael Mazur, and Pat Steir." (See also Susan Danly, "Branching: The Art of Michael Mazur," 1997). Jean Carzou (Armenian: Ժան Գառզու, 1 January 1907 – 12 August 2000) was a French–Armenian artist, painter, and illustrator, whose work illustrated the novels of Ernest Hemingway and Albert Camus. Carzou was born Karnik Zouloumian (Armenian: Գառնիկ Զուլումեան) in Aleppo, Syria to an Armenian family. Carzou later created his name from the first syllables of his name and surname, and added a Parisian nickname, "Jean". He was educated in Cairo, Egypt before moving to Paris in 1924 to study architecture. Carzou belonged to the art movement called "La Jeune Peinture" ("Young Picture") of the School of Paris, with painters like Bernard Buffet, Yves Brayer, Jansem, Jean Carzou, Louis Vuillermoz, Pierre-Henry, Daniel du Janerand, Gaston Sébire, Paul Collomb, Jean Monneret, Jean Joyet and Gaëtan de Rosnay. He started working as a theater set decorator but quickly realized he preferred drawing and painting. In 1938, more than a hundred exhibitions of his works were organized in Paris, in the French provinces and abroad. In 1949, he received the coveted Hallmark prize. Carzou, like his contemporaries Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso was part of a generation that witnessed many wars and was deeply affected by it. Carzou made his first lithograph in 1951 and was prolific in both the lithographic and etching medium. He had solo exhibitions throughout the world and was elected to the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1977. In 1952, he created costumes and sceneries for Les Indes Galantes of Rameau at the Opéra de Paris. He continued with Le Loup (1953) for "Les Ballets" of Roland Petit, Giselle (1954) and Athalie (1955) at the Opéra and "La Comédie française". Carzou mastered a number of mediums, though his line drawing and engraving would become well known as illustrations for some of the 20th century's most revered writers, including Hemingway, Albert Camus, Ionesco and Rimbaud. Carzou produced stunning work of painted glass and porcelain, in pencils, gauche and pastels as well as oil painting, often choosing to work on textured or irregular fabrics and papers rather than traditional canvas. Carzou was elected a member of the Institut de France, Académie des beaux-arts, succeeding in the seat left vacant by the death of painter Jean Bouchaud in 1977. He was also awarded the National Order of Merit of France. Among his closest friends were the painters Daniel du Janerand, Gabriel Deschamps, Louis Vuillermoz, Pierre-Henry, André Vignoles, Pierre Gaillardot, Rodolphe Caillaux...
