About the Item
Rare small lithograph by Eduardo Chillida, created in 1975 and originally produced as an invitation for one of the artist’s exhibitions. This piece comes from a scarce Épreuve d’Artiste (P.A.) edition, emphasizing its exclusivity and direct link to Chillida’s creative practice.
The lithograph is signed in the stone, consistent with the artist’s process for printed works, rather than hand-signed. This method preserves Chillida’s distinct graphic signature while underlining his mastery of form, balance, and spatial abstraction.
Known for his sculptural exploration of space, weight, and material, Chillida translated these same principles into his works on paper. This lithograph encapsulates his minimalist vocabulary through precise linework and thoughtful composition.
Elegantly framed in a black lacquered wooden frame, the piece is in very good vintage condition, with only light wear consistent with age. The subtle patina enriches its authenticity and visual depth, making it a refined and collectible artwork.
A rare opportunity for admirers of Eduardo Chillida, Spanish modernism, and 20th-century abstract art, this lithograph’s intimate scale and striking design make it an exceptional addition to any sophisticated collection.

Eduardo Chillida
Eduardo Chillida studied in Madrid and then went to Paris, where he was influenced by Pablo Palazuelo in his first figurative work, done in plaster and clay. Other influences were Frank Lloyd Wright, Albert Giacometti and Joan Miro. In 1950, he began doing printmaking lithography, woodcuts, etchings, drypoints and silkscreens. His graphics are not related to his sculpture but are creative expressions unto themselves. During the 60s, his graphics tended to be massive black lines on white, giving the appearance of realistic shapes.

He began his career in 1943 studying architecture at the University of Madrid, but in 1947 he dedicated himself to drawing and sculpture, and in 1948 he moved to Paris, then the world capital of the arts. Although he abandoned his studies, his work betrays his architectural training, showing an underlying sense of structural organization, as well as discipline in materials, planning of spatial relationships, and scale of elements.
Over the years, the artist turned to materials that showed his investigations into conceptual questions and metaphysical concerns. Chillida's first stone and plaster creations oscillated between the human world and the natural world using figures and images of landscapes.
Consistently guided by the quality of space, density and rhythm, his works consider ways in which mass and volume contain space. His public works, which exist on a more massive scale, not only inhabit the space but also determine a qualifying space of their own.
His monumental sculptures, designed for both urban and more secluded spaces, are permanently installed internationally and constitute an important facet of his artistic production.
The main retrospectives of Chillida's graphic and sculptural work have been mounted by the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston (1966); Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1979); National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1979); Guggenheim Museum (1980); Miramar Palace, San Sebastián (1992); and Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1999).

Eduardo Chillida(1924 - 2002). He was a Spanish artist. He began his career in 1943, studying architecture at the University of Madrid, but in 1947 he took up drawing and sculpture. In 1948 he moved to Paris, then the world capital of art. Although he dropped out of college, his work betrays his architectural training, revealing an underlying sense of structural organization as well as material discipline, planning spatial relationships, and scaling elements. For years, the artist used materials that were the basis for his research on conceptual and metaphysical issues. Chillida's early efforts in stone and plaster oscillated between humans and the natural world. His return to the Spanish Basque country in 1951 initiated a change of vision, focusing more on the metamorphosis of space and the definition of spatial volume through form. Chillida soon abandoned the plaster he had used in his Paris works in favor of iron, then wood and steel. These materials represent Basque traditions in industry, architecture and agriculture, and recall the landscape and black light of the region. Chillida began using alabaster for its illuminated but veiled appearance, he used it in the sculpture How Deep is the Air (1996). Despite his use of a variety of media, Chillida's intentions for simplicity and balance never allowed the material to take on a form alien to its nature. He was consistently guided by the quality of space, density and rhythm. Major retrospectives of Chillida's graphic and sculptural works have been exhibited by the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (1966), the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh (1979), the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. (1979), the Guggenheim Museum (1980), the Palacio de Miramar, San Sebastián (1992), and Museo nacional centro de arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (1999). Chillida's monumental sculptures designed for urban and more remote spaces are permanently installed internationally and constitute a central aspect of his artistic production. Chillida has received numerous awards, including the Grand International Sculpture Prize at the Venice Biennale (1958), the Kandinsky Prize (1960), the Carnegie Prize for Sculpture (1964), the Andrew Mellon...
