Each issue combined original lithographs with poetry and essays accompanying exhibitions at Galerie Maeght. The 1958 issue, No. 110, reflected Maeght’s ongoing commitment to presenting the leading figures of postwar abstraction, including Ellsworth Kelly, whose precise geometries and luminous fields of color bridged European modernism and the emerging American minimal aesthetic. Through its exceptional production and collaborations with the foremost artists of the 20th century—including Braque, Miro, Chagall, Leger, Bonnard, Chillida, and Giacometti—Derriere le Miroir became a benchmark of modern printmaking and artistic publishing. About the artist Ellsworth Kelly (1923–2015) was an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker associated with hard-edge painting, color field painting, and minimalism. His work demonstrates an elegant precision and restraint, emphasizing pure line, form, and color. Born in Newburgh, New York, Kelly studied at the Pratt Institute before serving in World War II, where his exposure to European architecture profoundly shaped his artistic perspective. After the war, he lived in Paris from 1948 to 1954, developing a refined approach to abstraction influenced by Byzantine and Romanesque art, as well as natural forms. Kelly’s art evolved into a dialogue between perception and structure, distilling visual experiences into simplified geometric compositions. Returning to the United States in 1954, he became a seminal figure in postwar abstraction, helping to define the transition toward minimalism. In November 2019, Kelly’s Red Curve VII sold for $9.8 million USD at Christie’s New York, setting a world record for the artist. His legacy endures as one of the most influential figures in modern art, whose vision continues to redefine the boundaries of form and color.
