About the Item

Esther Mahlangu Ndebele Abstract 2009 Screen print on paper Cm 61 x 80 Signature on silkscreen; Signed further in pen at lower left With embossed FIFA stamp certifying the work as an official product on the occasion of the World Cup played in South Africa in 2010. The piece is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity, issued by the Sarenco Foundation. One of South Africa’s most renowned artists, Esther Mahlangu paints vibrant geometric works based on traditional Ndebele designs. Growing up in the Ndebele community, she honed her line work while painting houses, a customarily female task. Mahlangu's iconic abstractions attracted international attention after his inclusion in the 1989 Centre Pompidou group exhibition "Magiciens de la Terre (Maghiens of the Earth)," where he painted a replica of his house in front of visitors. Two years later, she was the first woman and the first African artist to be commissioned to paint a BMW Art Car...
