San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs and woodcuts printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, Milan, and New York, including Mourlot, Curwen, and Amilcare Pizzi, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. The 1960 issue, XXe Siecle, Nouvelle serie, No. 14, showcased Daphnis et Chloe, one of Chagall’s most celebrated lithographic subjects, coinciding with his work on the monumental suite of lithographs inspired by the same pastoral tale, published by Teriade. Through this publication, San Lazzaro further cemented Chagall’s reputation as the modern poet of color and love, uniting myth, nature, and emotion in visual form. Today, XXe Siecle remains an essential record of 20th century modernism, celebrated for its seamless integration of fine art, literature, and design. About the Artist: Graham Sutherland (1903–1980) was a British painter, printmaker, and designer whose profound fusion of surrealism, symbolism, and modern abstraction defined him as one of the most visionary and psychologically compelling artists of the 20th century. Born in Streatham, London, Sutherland trained as an engraver at Goldsmiths’ College before turning to painting in the 1930s, when the revolutionary ideas of Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray inspired him to move beyond realism toward a poetic and symbolic modernism. Deeply influenced by nature and the British landscape, he developed a distinctive visual language rooted in organic form, transforming trees, roots, and geological structures into metaphors for vitality, fragility, and transformation. His early surrealist landscapes, imbued with the spiritual energy of Miro and the psychological tension of Dali, positioned him at the forefront of British modernism alongside Henry Moore and Paul Nash. As an official war artist during World War II, Sutherland produced haunting depictions of bombed cities and industrial ruins that became powerful visual meditations on destruction and resilience, earning him international acclaim. In the postwar years, his paintings grew increasingly monumental and expressive, culminating in his iconic Thorn Tree and Crucifixion series, which merged Christian iconography with modernist abstraction to explore suffering and redemption. His monumental tapestry Christ in Glory for Coventry Cathedral stands as one of the masterpieces of modern religious art, while his controversial portrait of Winston Churchill demonstrated his uncompromising psychological depth. Sutherland’s influence extended across generations, shaping the work of Francis Bacon, John Piper, Keith Vaughan, and later abstract and neo romantic painters who admired his synthesis of emotion and intellect. Exhibited widely at the Venice Biennale, the Tate, and the Museum of Modern Art, his works are housed in major collections including the Tate Britain, Centre Pompidou, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Collectors prize his art for its luminous color, organic rhythm, and spiritual power, qualities that link him to the great innovators of modernism, including Picasso, Dali, Miro, Kandinsky, Duchamp, Calder, Giacometti, and Man Ray. His highest auction record was achieved by The Crucifixion (1946), which sold for 2100000 USD at Christies London on February 7, 2011, reaffirming Graham Sutherland’s enduring legacy as one of the most visionary, expressive, and collectible British artists of the 20th century.
