Harold Town
Lines and Loops

1953

About the Item

Harold Town (1924-1990) is one of Canada's most influential and prolific artists. He also remains one of the best-known and most intriguing artists from the "Painters Eleven" group. Town's reputation was established in the mid-1950s with a series of unique prints ("Single Autographic Prints") that included collage elements. In 1956, he represented Canada at the Venice Biennale with the works from this body of work. This is an important and early Harold Town monotype. We can deduce that this was created during his first experiments with using printmaking materials, such as a lithographic stone, to make unique works. While later Single Autographic Prints were characterized by layers of color and collage elements, this untitled work (nicknamed "Lines and Loops") is noticeable for its spontaneity and simplicity. Town would both incorporate actual string into these works, but here a printed line emulates its form and character. This is not only the earliest Harold Town artwork we've handled, but also one of the earliest monotypes we've seen. Click here to see an example created only a week later in 1953. Throughout his career Town changed styles easily and impulsively, yet one of the recurring motifs in his work is a strong sense of dynamism and intricacy. Today, Town's work is represented in prestigious collections across North America including the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), and the Guggenheim (New York). Violet Chevron
By Kenneth Noland
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Kenneth Noland (1924 – 2010) is one of the most important artists and contributors to the evolution of American abstraction. He is one of the most beloved and enduring figures in the Color-Field movement. Unlike many of his contemporaries, such as Helen Frankenthaler and Sam Gilliam, Noland nearly rejected printmaking until later in his career. And once Noland began collaborating with the printmakers at Tyler Graphics (and other studios) he was more interested in using their applications to make unique one-of-a-kind artworks. This unique and intimately-scaled monotype is an excellent example of Noland's signature forms and aesthetic from the late 1970s/early 1980s. The chevron was a frequently employed motif of his, first debuting around 1963 and realized repeatedly through the years in different styles and medium. Here, Noland dissolves the strict geometric lines of his signature chevron or pointed "V", overwhelming the structure with color that appears to be either smeared, splattered or scraped. Lavender, pale rose, mauve, cornflower, chartreuse, ocean blue, ivory and pearl shift into and out of each other, yet avoiding the clear-cut stacked triangular outline of his signature chevron arrangement. Noland's chevrons are some of the most iconic and desirable works in the 20th-century art canon. This piece is a fine example of one of Noland's creations that showcases his ingenuity and mastery of color. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Future III: modernist urban architectural monoprint & collage in gray blue black
Located in Bryn Mawr, PA
"Future III" is a Bauhaus-inspired monotype and collage (work on paper) reminiscent of the aesthetic of Le Corbusier. It is part of Bouton’s "Habitat and Urban Matter" series, which is inspired by the straight lines of modernist architecture and hard-edged geometrical forms of the urban environment. Bouton, a French printmaker from Paris who has also lived in London, Myanmar, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Turkey, creates work that responds to her experiences during her travels and the cultures she encountered. Since settling in the Philadelphia area, she has been inspired by the urbanism of the city, whether a sleek, new apartment block, an abandoned warehouse, or a half-demolished home. Her latest works are interpretations of these buildings, with both broad street views and focused details from single structures –- the pattern of the skyline, a patchwork of broken windows, an industrial color palette. She is drawn to the history of the spaces and lives lived within these buildings, as well as their intrinsic beauty of the structures, whether that beauty emerges from design or degradation, or some combination of the two. Signed and dated. Bouton is a French artist living and working in the Philadelphia area whose boundary-pushing printmaking and paper works exhibit influence from living and working in international cities across the globe. Bouton earned her BFA in Painting and Printmaking and her MFA in Arts and Textile Design from the prestigious ESSAA Duperré in Paris, France. Since leaving Paris 15 years ago, Bouton has lived and exhibited her work internationally in Paris (France), London (UK), Philadelphia (USA), Rangoon (Burma/Myanmar), Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Dakar (Senegal) and Istanbul (Turkey). She has presented solo exhibitions at the Biennale de l’Art Africain...
