JACQUES VILLON 1875-1963 (Gaston Duchamp) Damville 1875-1963 Paris (French) Title: The Small Mechanical Workshop Le petit atelier de mécanique, 1914 Technique: Original Hand Signed and Inscribed Etching on Arches Laid Paper Paper size: 24 x 32 cm. / 9.4 x 12.6 in. Image size: 16.4 x 19.7 cm. / 6.3 x 7.8 in. Additional Information: This etching is hand signed in by the artist in pencil "Jacques Villon" at the lower right margin. It is also signed and dated in the lower image. It is inscribed in pencil "essai" [proof], in the lower left margin. It is a proof before the edition of 50. Note: This is the first example of Villon’s use of dividing the surface of the plate with pyramidal shapes, a key component of the Cubist style. Provenance: The Collection of Olga Carré-Burel formally known as the Collection of Louis Carré. This was one of the most important collections of Villon's work in the world if not the most important one. Olga Carré (born Burel) was the wife of the important Paris Gallery owner and Collector Louis Carré. He passed away in 1977 and so his wife, Olga Carré, inherited his collection. Louis Carré was the main dealer of Jacques Villon and exhibited his works regularly in his Gallery in Paris and New York. Most of their collection was bought directly from the artists.
