San Lazzaro, a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism, believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Jacomet, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design, an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro's belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Jean Fautrier (1898–1964) was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker whose groundbreaking fusion of emotion, texture, and material established him as one of the most visionary and influential figures of postwar European art. Revered as a founder of Art Informel, Fautrier transformed abstraction into a vehicle for human experience, creating work that bridged the trauma of World War II with the philosophical intensity of existentialism. Born in Paris and trained in London, he returned to France to join the avant-garde circle that included Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, sought new ways to express the human condition. His early work blended Impressionist atmosphere with Expressionist emotion, but his experience of the Nazi occupation profoundly altered his vision, leading to the creation of his legendary Otages (Hostages) series (1943–1945). In these haunting works, Fautrier abandoned traditional representation to give form to human suffering through texture and matter, applying thick impastos of pigment and plaster to paper and canvas until they became sculptural surfaces vibrating with life and loss. These luminous, semi-abstract heads and torsos emerged from the material itself, embodying both pain and endurance while redefining the expressive potential of paint. His radical technique—treating pigment as substance, gesture as emotion, and surface as psychology—made him a progenitor of Art Informel and influenced a generation of artists including Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Soulages, Antoni Tapies, and Cy Twombly. Like Alberto Giacometti and Wols, Fautrier transformed the anxieties of postwar Europe into an art of profound humanity, bridging the intellectual rigor of prewar modernism with the emotional immediacy that later defined Abstract Expressionism. Celebrated for his moral and philosophical depth, he won the International Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale in 1960, affirming his place among the giants of 20th-century art. His later paintings of nudes, still lifes, and abstracted figures continued to explore the relationship between material and meaning, revealing the same tactile sensitivity and meditative strength that had defined his earlier works. Admired by writers and philosophers such as Jean Paulhan, Francis Ponge, and Andre Malraux, Fautrier was regarded as both painter and thinker—a poet of matter who expressed the duality of destruction and renewal through the physicality of paint. His work profoundly influenced later generations of European and American artists, from Robert Rauschenberg and Willem de Kooning to Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter, all of whom echoed his belief that art could reveal the invisible truths of existence. Today, his paintings are held in major collections worldwide, including the Centre Pompidou, MoMA, Tate Modern, and the Guggenheim, and he stands alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray as one of the key architects of modern visual language. His highest auction record was achieved by Head of a Hostage No. 14 (Tete d'otage no. 14) (1944), which sold for $6.79 million USD at Sotheby’s, London, on February 27, 2018, reaffirming his legacy as one of the most profound, materially innovative, and collectible artists of the 20th century. By Otto Neumann
Located in New Orleans, LA
Otto Neumann (1895-1975) was a German Expressionist painter and printmaker. His monotypes evolved from sharp, angular, black and whites to late abstract prints in a variety of colors. Neumann lived through revolutionary changes in the art world of prewar and postwar Germany. He was a prolific artist in Germany during a time of the country’s unprecedented academic and intellectual growth. His early work shows the influence of both French masters like Cezanne and the contemporary style that was then being developed by German Expressionists like Kirchner. A master printmaker, Neumann was also inspired by the works of Albrecht Durer, whose allegorical subject-matter and unmatched drawing technique Neumann would emulate throughout his career. A lifetime preoccupation with the human figure informs his work, with frieze-like human figures recalling ancient Greek art...
