Jean-Michel Basquiat
Lt. Ed. Monograph of drawings, hand signed and numbered by Jean-Michel Basquiat

1985

About the Item

In July, 2022, another example of this rare, hand signed lifetime limited edition monograph (book) of offset lithographs, hand signed and numbered on the first front end page, sold at Sotheby's in London for approx US $40,000 This is a lifetime edition - hand signed and numbered by Jean-Michel Basquiat himself in Basquiat's lifetime. Many younger collectors don't appreciate the difference between the numerous posthumous estate authorized prints and reproductions that keep alighting since Basquiat's death - and the rare collectors' items like this monograph that were hand signed and numbered by Basquiat before he died in 1988 at the young age of only 28. JEAN MICHEL BASQUIAT Jean Michel Basquiat 1985 Hardback limited edition monograph, bound with offset lithograph illustrations. Hand signed and numbered in ink by Jean-Michel Basquiat 10 1/2 × 14 × 1/2 inches Edition 496/1000 Boldly signed in ink by Jean Michel Basquiat on the first front end page and numbered from the limited edition of 1000 Published by Edition Bruno Bischofberger and Mary Boone Gallery Considering Jean-Michel Basquiat died in 1988 at the age of only 27, there are very very few hand signed, numbered and absolutely authentic limited edition documented works by him - at a relatively affordable price point. This is one of them. And given that this was published and signed by the young Basquiat on the occasion of his exhibition at the legendary European gallery Bruno Bischofberger, it is especially uncommon stateside. This stunning vintage First Edition hardback monograph with pictorial jacket is boldly signed in ink by Jean-Michel Basquiat, and numbered from the limited edition of only 1000. It has 76 pages and is lavishly illustrated with 32 full page plates. This is an extremely rare and highly collectible piece - and it makes a terrific gift for fans and collectors of Basquiat. Hand signed pieces like this, done with Basquiat's enthusiastic collaboration, are true collectors' items.

  • British Pop: Mail Order, for Culture Carriers Stamp Out Art (Lt Ed signed stamp)
    By Allen Jones
    Located in New York, NY
ALLEN JONES Mail Order, for Culture Carriers Stamp Out Art, from The Collection of Art Critic Anthony Haden-Guest, 1971 Lithograph mounted on franked envelope of wove paper (Hand Signed) 6 × 9 inches Edition of 250 (unnumbered) Hand signed in blue ink by Allen Jones with his initials on the lower left of the lithographic stamp, affixed to the envelope. Unframed As a consequence of the prolonged strike by the Royal Mail postal workers in the United Kingdom, Allen Jones, along with a group of top British Pop artists of the era including David Hockney, Eduardo Paolozzi, Derek Boshier, the poet/activist Christopher Logue and Richard Hamilton, published ''Culture Carriers Stamp Out Art''to raise funds for the striking workers. The "stamps" were published in a limited edition of only 250 each (some artists, like Paolozzi and Allen Jones created more than one design), with the artists signing each by hand in blue ink with his initials on the lower right. Allen Jones "Mail Order" is an especially clever take on the project; it is at once a postage stamp (hence the title "Mail Order"), but it also refers to the popular mail order catalogues of the era. It was a particular preoccupation of Jones, who, separately, created a large lithograph called "Janet is Wearing" -- referring to his wife Janet, but playing upon the advertising jargon of the day, used in mail order catalogues. For this particular project - creating a stamp to raise money for mail carriers...

  • One Thousand Drawings By Tracey Emin (Hand signed and inscribed book for Nadine)
    By Tracey Emin
    Located in New York, NY
Tracey Emin One Thousand Drawings By Tracey Emin (Hand signed and inscribed for Nadine), 2009 Hardback monograph with dust jacket (ink signed and inscribed by Tracey Emin) Hand signed, dated and inscribed to Nadine by Tracey Emin 7 × 10 × 2 1/2 inches This is the First Edition of the hardback monograph with dust jacket "One Thousand Drawings" by Tracey Emin - featuring reproductions of 1000 of her drawings. It was hand signed, dated and inscribed in ink to the current owner - our gallery director - at the 2011 Marc Jacobs pop up bookstore in Manhattan. (see attached article for details) Inscription reads: For Nadine Love Tracey Emin 2011 NY X Publisher's Blurb: Tracey Emin has stirred controversy as well as acclaim since she rose to fame as the most highly publicized of the infamous Young British Artists. Though denounced by conservative critics at the outset, Emin’s work has attracted serious critical attention since the early 1990s for being consistently engaging, original, and startlingly direct. Her work has succeeded over the years in many media—from films to appliqués, embroideries, and installations—but it is in her works on paper that the honesty and frankness that have come to characterize her work are most fully realized. Edited by the artist herself from an archive of work stretching back before the beginnings of her career in the late 1980s, A Thousand Drawings is at once a collection of Emin’s works on paper, an exposé of her life as an artist, and a collectible artifact in itself. Many of these works on paper shed light on well-known multimedia pieces, previously studied in Works 1963–2006, published by Rizzoli in 2006. Stripped of the distractions of form and context, her bare and enigmatic drawings are presented on bible-thin paper in a uniquely beautiful slipcased volume, with an introduction by the artist. From considered self-portraits to pen-and-ink drawings and informal studies on lined notebook paper, this remarkable collection is as much a catalogue of Emin’s preoccupations as it is a monument to her raw and evocative talents as an artist. Review “Emin-an artist who is not afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve, or, indeed too embroider it on a blanket-personally chose the pictures for this book, and the delicate sketches are at once a glimpse of the profundity she’s capable of, and a reminder of vulnerability.” ~Nylon Magazine About the Author Tracey Emin was born in London in 1963. Nominated for the Turner Prize in 1999 and chosen to represent Britain at the 52nd Venice Biennale in 2007, Emin is also a member of the Royal Academy of Arts. The author of several books, including Strangeland, her memoir, she contributes regularly to The Independent newspaper and lives and works in London.
