About the Item

Jim Dine (b. 1935) "Five Paintbrushes (3rd State)" Etching with drypoint, mezzotint and aquatint on Copperplate Deluxe paper, 1973 20-1/2 x 27-1/4 inches (52.1 x 69.2 cm) (image) Ed. 18/28 Signed, numbered, and dated in pencil along lower edge Published by Petersburg Press, Inc., New York Printed by Alan Uglow and Winston Roeth, New York LITERATURE: Galerie Mikro, 173 Although often associated with both Pop Art and Abstract Expressionism, Jim Dine did not identify with a specific movement, producing a vast oeuvre of paintings, drawings, works on paper, sculpture, poetry and performances. Emerging as a pioneer of New York’s Happenings of the 1960’s, Dine would carry the spontaneous energy of this movement throughout his style, which emphasized the exploration of everyday life. Personally significant objects were Dine’s primary motifs, as in his iconic series of hearts and robes. Jim Dine studied at the University of Cincinnati and the Boston Museum School, and received his B.F.A. from Ohio University, Athens, where he was also enrolled in the graduate program. Dine moved to New York City in 1958, where he had his first group (1959) and solo (1960) exhibitions. Since his first solo exhibition in 1960, Dine’s paintings, sculptures, photography, and prints have been the subject of nearly 300 solo exhibitions worldwide. In 2008, Dine became the first contemporary artist invited to exhibit at the J. Paul Getty Museum. Dine has been the subject of nine major retrospectives since 1970. This piece in particular is a permanent fixture in the prints collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston as well as the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division. Dine’s work is held in more than 70 important public collections worldwide, including the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo; The Art Institute of Chicago; The Cleveland Museum of Art; Hakone Open-Air Museum, Hakone-machi, Japan; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; The Israel Museum, Jerusalem; The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Musée national d’art moderne, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R.
