About the Item

Joan Miró (Spanish, 1893–1983) Cartones, 1965 Original color lithograph on paper Hand-signed in green crayon by Miró Dimensions: Printed by Mourlot, Paris Published by Pierre Matisse Gallery, New York Accompanied by original Certificate of Authenticity (COA) from Collectors Group, Inc. This vibrant lithograph, Cartones, embodies Joan Miró’s signature fusion of playful abstraction and bold symbolism. Executed in 1965, the composition brims with energy, as sweeping black gestures and colorful biomorphic shapes unfold across the surface in a dynamic dialogue of form and space. Miró’s use of pure, saturated color — crimson, cobalt, emerald, and yellow — highlights his mastery of the printmaking medium, which he explored in close collaboration with the famed Mourlot Atelier in Paris. Hand-signed by Miró in green crayon, this work was published by the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, one of the artist’s most important representatives, and stands as an authentic testament to his mid-century output. Recently reframed and matted to museum-quality standards, the piece is preserved in excellent condition and is offered with its original Certificate of Authenticity (COA). A striking and collectible example of Miró’s graphic work, Cartones reflects the artist’s ability to merge spontaneity with sophistication, making it a centerpiece for any modern art collection. About the artist : Joan Miró (1893–1983) Joan Miró was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and printmaker, widely celebrated as one of the most original and influential artists of the 20th century. Born in Barcelona in 1893, he studied at the School of Fine Arts (La Llotja) and the Academy of Francisco Galí, where he absorbed both academic traditions and avant-garde experimentation. His early work was influenced by Catalan folk art, Fauvism, and Cubism, but by the early 1920s, after moving to Paris, he became closely associated with the Surrealist movement. Miró developed a distinctive visual language that fused abstraction with poetic symbolism. His paintings, prints, and sculptures feature bold lines, biomorphic shapes, playful signs, and vivid primary colors, often arranged against spacious backgrounds. He explored themes of dreams, nature, and the subconscious, creating works that feel both whimsical and profound. Recurring motifs such as stars, eyes, moons, birds, and female figures became hallmarks of his artistic vocabulary. A tireless innovator, Miró worked across media — from painting and sculpture to ceramics, murals, and monumental public works — while also being a master printmaker, producing a vast body of lithographs and etchings. His collaborations with renowned printers such as Mourlot in Paris expanded his influence and made his graphic work highly collectible. Throughout his career, Miró exhibited internationally, with major retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Tate in London, and the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris. His works are held in leading museums and private collections worldwide. Miró passed away in Palma de Mallorca in 1983, leaving a legacy as a pioneer who bridged Surrealism and abstraction, and whose playful yet profound art continues to inspire generations.
