About the Item

This exquisite lithograph and pochoir by Lucio Fontana (1899–1968), titled Concetto Spaziale (Spatial Concept), from the album XXe siecle, Nouvelle serie, XXIe Annee, No. 12, Mai-Juin 1959, originates from the 1959 edition published by Societe Internationale d'Art XXe siecle, Paris, under the direction of Gualtieri di San Lazzaro, editeur, Paris, and rendered and printed by Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris. Concetto Spaziale exemplifies Fontana’s revolutionary approach to matter and space, expressing the artist’s belief that the surface of art could be a portal to the infinite. With his signature minimalist precision and meditative energy, Fontana transformed the act of creation into a dialogue between gesture, light, and void. Executed as a lithograph and pochoir on velin paper, this work measures 12.5 × 9.75 inches (31.75 × 24.77 cm). Unsigned and unnumbered as issued. The edition exemplifies the superb craftsmanship of Daniel Jacomet et Cie, Paris. San Lazzaro—a visionary editor, critic, and champion of modernism—believed that art and literature should coexist as expressions of a shared human imagination. Under his direction, XXe Siecle became a cultural bridge between Europe and the wider world, publishing special issues devoted to leading figures such as Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Braque, Calder, Miro, Kandinsky, and Leger. Each edition combined essays by renowned critics and poets with original lithographs printed by the foremost ateliers of Paris, including Mourlot, Arte, and Bellini, creating a uniquely rich dialogue between text and image. Through XXe Siecle, San Lazzaro preserved the creative spirit of the avant-garde during and after World War II, championing freedom of expression and the evolution of abstraction, Surrealism, and modern thought. Over nearly four decades, the journal shaped international taste and defined the intellectual landscape of postwar art publishing. Today, XXe Siecle remains celebrated for its extraordinary synthesis of art, literature, and design—an enduring testament to Gualtieri di San Lazzaro’s belief that the visual arts are the soul of the modern age. About the Artist: Lucio Fontana (1899–1968) was an Argentine-Italian artist, sculptor, and visionary innovator whose radical approach to space, form, and material permanently transformed modern art. Revered as the founder of Spatialism (Spazialismo), Fontana shattered the traditional boundaries of painting and sculpture by cutting, piercing, and puncturing the canvas to reveal the infinite void beyond, transforming the two-dimensional surface into a living, multidimensional field. Born in Rosario, Argentina, and trained in both Buenos Aires and Milan, Fontana combined the discipline of sculpture with the conceptual daring of the European avant-garde. He was deeply influenced by and in dialogue with artistic giants such as Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray—artists who, like him, redefined the very essence of art. From Picasso, Fontana learned the expressive possibilities of form; from Kandinsky, the spiritual power of abstraction; from Duchamp, the notion of art as idea; and from Calder and Miro, the poetry of movement and space. His groundbreaking Concetti Spaziali (“Spatial Concepts”)—the famous slashed (Tagli) and punctured (Buchi) monochrome canvases—were not acts of destruction but meditations on creation, offering glimpses into the infinite through the simplest of gestures. These works reflected Fontana’s fascination with postwar scientific discovery, space exploration, and the metaphysical dimensions of existence, marking a profound shift from representation to revelation. His exploration of light, movement, and technology in his Spatial Environments (Ambienti spaziali) anticipated Minimalism, Conceptual Art, and the immersive installations of later decades. Throughout his career, Fontana sought to unify matter and energy, body and cosmos, gesture and idea—his art functioning as both object and experience, simultaneously physical and metaphysical. His influence on later generations of artists was monumental, inspiring Yves Klein, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani, Anish Kapoor, James Turrell, and Damien Hirst, among others, and his philosophy of spatial art continues to shape contemporary discourse on perception and the void. Exhibited at major institutions worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, Tate Modern, Centre Pompidou, and Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Fontana remains one of the defining figures of postwar art. Standing alongside Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, Alberto Giacometti, Salvador Dali, Joan Miro, Wassily Kandinsky, Marcel Duchamp, and Man Ray, Lucio Fontana endures as a master of modern abstraction—a visionary who opened the canvas to the cosmos and transformed art into an exploration of infinite space. His highest auction record was achieved by Concetto spaziale, La fine di Dio (1964), which sold for $29.2 million USD at Christie’s, New York, on November 7, 2015, reaffirming Fontana’s enduring legacy as one of the most influential, revolutionary, and collectible artists of the 20th century.
