About the Item

Psychedelic silkscreen work by Noche Crist (1909- 2004). Self printed by the artist. Wonderful work and one of only two remaining from her estate. Image is from her "In the Sun" series. When work is viewed it creates an optical illusion of movement. Catalogue of a postumous retrospective in 2008 at the American University Museum Katzen Arts Center in Washington D.C. is included. The work is museum quality framed and measures 20" x 24". Signed lower right. The last two photos are of a Christimas card from the artist to Leo Castelli in 1966 from the Smithsonian Archives. Crist's work was recently featured in the inaugural exhibition at the Romanian Cultural Institute in NYC and is in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian and The American Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore. The Romanian born, self-taught artist is known for her acrylic paintings on wooden panels and shaped transparent polyester resin sculptures that create images reminiscent of her childhood at her family's country estate outside Bucharest. Her works depict dreamlike, surreal scenes of partially dressed women posing seductively in opulent, sometimes fantastical, settings. In other paintings and panels, she portrays bare-breasted women and felines sensually intertwined. Noche Crist was well known not only for her paintings and sculptures but also her storytelling and entertaining that helped turn her into a legendary figure in the Washington D.C. art scene. Her works gained a following among art patrons, including Olga Hirshhorn, one of Washington's leading art collectors.

Located in Washington, DC
Geometric abstraction painting by Brazilian-born artist Elizabeth Freire. Painting is acrylic on canvas. Signed on reverse and titled "From the Center". B&W photo is of Ms. Freire with renowned sculptor Etienne Martin at the Ecole Nationals des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Elizabeth Freire is a Brazilian-born, contemporary American artist. At the age of eighteen, she left Rio de Janeiro and moved to Paris to study sculpture at l’Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts, receiving her Diploma there in 1979 under the direction of Claude Viseux, Etienne Martin, and Cesar. She spent 1977 in Aix-en-Provence where she carved the local stone of Rogne. Returning to Paris, the painter Lutka Pink introduced her to Otero, Frans Krajcberg and Hajdu from whom she received valuable lessons. In 1978, she traveled to Brazil where she was invited to participate in the exhibit ‘A Century of Sculpture in Brazil’. She also met with the sculptor Sergio Camargo and the architect Oscar Niemeyer. She then traveled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa. In 1983, the sculptor Cardenaz advised her to go to Carrara in Italy to develop her carving skills. She spent the following two years at the Studio Nicoli where she met the sculptors Knutt Steen, Gigi Guadagnucci...
