About the Item
Lithograph on vélin d’Arches paper. Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued. Good Condition; never framed or matted. Notes: From the volume, Allo! Paris!, 1926. Published by Éditions des Quatre Chemins, Paris; printed by Engelmann, Graf, Coindet & Company, Paris, and L'Imprimerie du Livre, Paris, October 15, 1926. Excerpted from the volume (translated from French), This volume has been finished printing October, Fifteen, 1926. For the text: by the printing of the book A. Rueil, H. Filipacchi being director, and for engravings by Engelmann printer—lithographs in Paris. It was taken from this volume: an example on hollande van paper gelder with a sequel of lithographs on paper from china, and original sketches, bearing number 1 to 24 examples on holland paper van gelder with a suite of paper lithographs from china, numbered from 2 to 25, and 300 examples on arches paper numbered from 26 to 325. It was also pulled out of trade: 15 examples on holland paper van gelder, numbered from I to xv. 25 examples on arches paper, numbered from xvi to xl. Quoted from the catalogue entry from the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart (translated from German), Based on drawings and motifs from his paintings, Robert Delaunay created the lithographs for ALLO! PARIS! Avec vingt lithographies par Robert Delaunay. They illustrate poems by Joseph Delteil in ten chapters and show all the important sights of the French metropolis, including some from unusual perspectives from a bird's eye view: Sacré-Coeur, the Île de la Cité with Nôtre-Dame, Saint Sévérin, the Arch de Triumph on the Place de l'Étoile, the Place de la Concorde, Montmartre, the boulevards, the Seine with its bridges and of course the Eiffel Tower. This only work illustrated by Delaunay is a declaration of love to Paris in text and images. Quoted from the catalogue entry from The Minneapolis Institute of Art, One of the pioneers of European modernism, Robert Delaunay was primarily a painter, only occasionally delving into printmaking and book illustration. Indeed, Allo! Paris! features his only original book illustrations. The book's subject is the rhythm and vitality of Paris, as manifested in its various architectural landmarks. Delaunay focuses on the Eiffel Tower, which at the time was the world's tallest structure and a potent symbol of modernity. The 20 monochromatic lithographs offer a glimpse of Delaunay's fascination with Cubist fragmentation of space.
ROBERT DELAUNAY (1885-1941) was a French artist of the School of Paris movement who, with his wife, Sonia Delaunay and others, co-founded the Orphism art movement, noted for its use of strong colours and geometric shapes. His later works were more abstract. His key influence related to bold use of colour and a clear love of experimentation with both depth and tone. He was in the milieu of Picasso and Matisse.

Derain, Au Jardin d'Allah, Verve: Revue Artistique et Littéraire (after)
By André Derain
Located in Auburn Hills, MI
Lithograph on vélin du Marais paper. Inscription: Signed in the plate, with additional lithography by the artist on verso. Good condition. Notes: From the volume, Verve: Revue Artistique et Littéraire, Vol. I, N° 4, 1939. Printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris, 1939.
ANDRE DERAIN (1880-1954) had a major role in the development of two of the most significant artistic movements of the early-20th century. He, Henri Matisse, and Maurice de Vlaminck were responsible for generating works with a totally new style which would become Fauvism and his association with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque was integral to early Cubism. Nevertheless, his contribution as the generator of the ideas behind these movements is constantly debated, and some consider his work derivative. This is due in part to the fact that, continually in search of artistic meaning and attempting to create a timeless art removed from the specificity of the modern age, he experimented with different stylistic idioms. Whichever side of the Derain debate you end up on, we can all appreciate his use of expressive vibrant color, his simplification of form, and his fascination with primitive art were constants throughout his work and played a major role in the creation and propagation of early Modern Art.

Thin-lipped Armourer I: W. H. Auden poetry with Henry Moore, Yorkshire landscape
By Henry Moore
Located in New York, NY
This darkly-shaded portrait of two figures is one of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist for the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist lower right in pencil; numbered lower left in pencil.
Printed in inky black, Thin-lipped Armourer features two figures subsumed in crosshatched shadow. The figure on the left can barely be seen, and the hollows of his eyes recall a skull. Numerous Moore prints from this series include two heads, perhaps relating to the first lines of Auden’s poem Lullaby. Lullaby was the first poem Moore read for this project, which begins:
“Lay your sleeping head, my love / Human on my faithless arm; / Time and fevers burn away Individual beauty from / Thoughtful children, and the grave / Proves the child ephemeral: / But in my arms till break of day / Let the living creature lie, / Mortal, guilty, but to me / The entirely beautiful.”
This print evinces Moore’s fascination with light and dark – what he called a “…bias towards the blackness and mysterious depths.” Moore was inspired by the prints of Rembrandt and the drawings of Seurat, and even drew on his memories of viewing the Altamira cave paintings, recalling how some of the images used the shadow of candlelight on the rough surface of the rock to model light. Shortly before starting work on this series of lithographs, Moore had fallen ill, leaving him aware of his own mortality. His mood pervaded these prints with a sense of danger and foreboding.
The Auden/Moore limited edition book and portfolio were exhibited on publication at the British Museum, London, with an accompanying catalogue. Thin-lipped Armourer I is one of a group of lithographs...

Lullaby Sketches: black white drawing based on Auden poetry and Yorkshire lands
By Henry Moore
Located in New York, NY
One of a series of 18 lithographs drawn by the artist for the Auden Poems/Moore Lithographs 1974 book and portfolio. This work is from an edition of 25 printed on vellum aside from the portfolio (edition of 75) and the book. Signed by the artist and numbered 1/25 lower left in pencil.
This print features small sketches of heads resting on forearms. Moore experimented with different angles, appearing to practice for the composition for Lullaby: Sleeping Head, which depicts a shadowy figure supporting the head of a sleeping woman. Lullaby: Sketches is a rare window into Moore’s process of composing an image. Delicate, single-line arms and hair reveal the sculptor’s equal talent as a draftsman.
The imagery for Lullaby Sketches was inspired by Auden’s poem Lullaby.
The Auden/Moore limited edition book and portfolio were exhibited on publication at the British Museum, London, with an accompanying catalogue. Lullaby Sketches is one of a group of lithographs...
