About the Item

Lithograph, ca1970 Handsigned by the artist in pencil and annotated HC 55.50 cm. x 75.50 cm. | 21.85 in. x 29.72 in. (paper) 45.00 cm. x 58.00 cm. | 17.72 in. x 22.83 in. (image) A very beautiful lithograph by Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979. With her husband Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), she was one of the pioneers of abstraction at the beginning of the 20th century, creating a movement called "Orphism" by the poet Guillaume Apollinaire. An abstraction dominated by color, often arranged in interacting circles. This work, Cinema, dating from the 1970s, is a rare artwork by the artist. Rare and very original within her production, because it has a referent in reality: the cinema, or more precisely: a film screening. The circles, so present in the work of the Delaunay spouses, represent projector lenses. The triangle at the top left of the composition could be the beam of light coming out of the projector and causing the image to exist on the screen. In this artpiece, the two pillars of Sonia Delaunay's art are gathered: color and light, let us add that this light is no the sun (which literally fascinated Robert Delauanay at the beginning of the 20th century), but that of movie rooms. This work is fascinating, because the great abstract artist Sonia Delaunay makes an exception here with this explicit reference to reality. This is the power of cinema. LCD5961
