Joan Miró was a famous Spanish Catalan surreal painter, sculptor and ceramicist, but he also created graphics, large installations and murals. His radical style for that time was a contribution to the early-20th-century avant-garde and complete abstraction later. Early fauvistic works showed the influence of Cézanne, in cubist compositions, but also a reference to the avant-garde interests of the painter. Few years later he started to change his artistic approach over the magic realism to surrealism. His surfaces become abstract and stayed like that until the rest of his career. Miró’s mature style evolved from the tension between his fanciful, poetic impulse and his vision of the harshness of modern life. The artworks are reflections of his subconscious mind, filled with pictorial signs, biomorphic forms, geometric shapes, and abstract and semi-abstract objects. Frans Horbach (Dutch, b. 1947) is an Amsterdam based artist who has exhibited in The Netherlands, France and the United States. He holds a Bachelor of Arts & Architecture degree from the University of California at Berkeley. Horbach’s father was a country physician who worked out of their family home, and his mother was a primary school teacher. After finishing secondary school, Horbach went to the port of Rotterdam and managed to get a job on a freighter bound for South America. He worked on different ships and visited places in Brazil, Argentine, Uruquay, as well as New York for the first time while working on the passenger liner 'Statendam'. Two years later Hornbach emigrated to America at 19 years old. He lived in Silicon Valley, south of San Francisco, working different odd jobs during the day and studying at night. Horbach traveled throughout Mexico and Peru, staying in Mexico to study art and cultural anthropology at the Universidad de las Americas. After returning to California, Horbach studied art and architecture at the University of California in Berkeley. He traveled to some of the Native American Indian reservations in the south-western states of America, including the Navajo, Hopi, Puebla and Zuni tribes in Arizona and New Mexico, continuing into Mexico, into the Sierra Madre mountains, the remote highlands of Nayarit, home of the Huichol Indians. After receiving graduating from Berkeley, he made a long journey to India, to the Himalayas, traveling overland through Turkey, Iran, Afganisthan, Pakistan and Nepal. These extensive travels have influenced Horbachs style, learning from experts, artisans, craftsmen, and citizens that he met along the way. He now lives and works in the Jordaan neighborhood in Amsterdam, and is married to Veronica Nahmias, a Romanian-born artist and children's book illustrator. Rauschenberg was known for assemblage*, conceptualist methods, printmaking, and willingness to experiment with non-artistic materials--all innovations that anticipated later movements such as Pop Art*, Conceptualism*, and Minimalism*. In May, 1999, ARTNews magazine featured him as one of the top twenty-five influential western artists, stating: "His irreverent notions of what an artwork could be gained him the status of an enfant terrible. . .Rauschenberg pushed the viewer to accept the unexpected." He has said that he believes painting should relate to both life and art and that he wants is artwork to be the intermediary between the two. He received much formal art education beginning with the Kansas City Art Institute in 1947 and 1948. He studied briefly in Paris at the Academie Julian*, and from 1948 to 1949 was at Black Mountain College* in North Carolina with Josef and Anni Albers. This period was followed by several years attendance at the Art Students League* in New York City with Morris Kantor and Vaclav Vytlacil. In 1951, he exhibited all white and black paintings incorporating viewer participation through the shadows they cast on the works. At Black Mountain College, he had met composer, John Cage, and dancer- choreographer, Merce Cunningham, for whom he worked in his company as a designer, manager, and performer.
