About the Item

VICTOR VASARELY – "ZEBRES 1" ⚜ Serigraph ⚜ Hand Signed and Numbered ⚜ Edition of 120 VASARELY’S ICONIC ZEBRAS Created in 1976 and published by the Foundation Vasarely in an edition of 200, "Zebres 1" is part of the artist’s legendary series that laid the foundation for Op Art. The interplay of diagonal black-and-white stripes forms the dynamic image of zebras, a subject Vasarely revisited throughout his career as a symbol of rhythm, energy, and the optical effects of perception. The zebra motif holds a unique place in art history: in 1937, Vasarely’s early Zebra images marked one of the first true expressions of optical abstraction. By 1976, "Zebres 1" reflects the refinement of these ideas, demonstrating the artist’s ability to merge abstraction with figuration while redefining visual language in the 20th century. INCLUDED DOCUMENTATION: ✓ Certificate of Authenticity ✓ Artist Biography Document THE ARTIST: Victor Vasarely (1906–1997) was a Hungarian–French artist celebrated as the father of Op Art. His pioneering manipulation of geometric forms and optical illusions established him as one of the most influential figures of 20th-century modern art. Vasarely’s early Zebra works are considered the first true Op Art images, predating and inspiring the international Op Art movement of the 1960s. Closely associated with contemporaries such as Bridget Riley, Jesús Rafael Soto, Yaacov Agam, and Carlos Cruz-Diez, Vasarely developed a universal visual language that merged science, abstraction, and design. His bold use of line and color has also been compared to the innovations of Josef Albers and M.C. Escher, situating him at the crossroads of Bauhaus rationalism and optical experimentation. Today, Vasarely’s works are represented in major institutions including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Tate Modern (London), and MoMA (New York). Collectors of Op Art, Kinetic Art, and Modernist abstraction continue to prize Vasarely’s serigraphs and paintings, particularly his iconic zebra compositions, which remain timeless symbols of optical perception and visual rhythm.
