About the Item
Edward Donovan (1768–1837) was an Anglo Irish writer, natural history illustrator and amateur zoologist. Born in Cork, Ireland, Donovan was an avid collector of natural history specimens purchased mainly at auctions of specimens from voyages of exploration.
Donovan often used thick paints, burnished highlights, albumen overglazes and metallic paints. These covered the engravings from his own copper plates, Donovan personally undertook all steps of the illustration process for his books, the drawing, the etching and engraving and the hand coloring. At other times the fineness of his engraving and etching gives his illustrations the appearance of being watercolors.
In 1807 he founded the London Museum and Institute of Natural History. This exhibited several hundred cases of world birds, mammals, reptiles, fish, mollusks, insects, corals and other invertebrates and botanical specimens and other exotica alongside his British collections

Dace and Chub - Graceful Scandinavian Freshwater Fish Lithograph
This elegant 19th-century lithograph from *Skandinaviens Fiskar* features three iconic freshwater fish species of Scandinavia: the Ide (Leuciscus idus), the Graining (Leuciscus grislagine), and the European Chub (Leuciscus cephalus). Beautifully illustrated by Wilhelm von Wright and published by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag in Stockholm, this plate is an exquisite example of both scientific accuracy and artistic craftsmanship.
At the top, the Ide (Leuciscus idus) is depicted with its slender, torpedo-shaped body and metallic, silver-gray scales, giving it a sleek and dynamic appearance. The slight golden hue along the lateral line and the soft pinkish tint of the fins are meticulously rendered, capturing the fish’s natural vibrancy. The Ide is a resilient and adaptable species, inhabiting rivers and lakes throughout northern Europe. It is prized both as a food fish...
