About the Item

This is a rare 18th Century hand-colored copperplate engraving entitled "Wasserhuhn" (Coot) by Johann Leonhard Frisch , which is plate 208 from the 1st edition of his publication 'Vorstellung der Vogel in Teutschland und Beylaugffig auch Einiger Fremden, mit Ihren Eigenschaften Beschrieben…und Nach Iheren Naturlichen Farben', published in Berlin, Germany in 1733. This engraving depicts a Coot bird; medium-sized water birds which have predominantly black plumage. They are usually easy to find, often swimming in open water. They are close relatives of the moorhen. This beautiful hand-colored engraving of a coot bird is printed on original 18th century chain-linked laid paper with a fleur-de-lys watermark. The sheet measures 13.5" x 9". There is a tiny pinhole centrally and a very small faint mark in the lower margin. It is otherwise in very good to excellent condition. Johann Leonhard Frisch (1666-1743) was a German scholar who was a headmaster at a school in Berlin, a singer, a minister, an interpreter for the German army, and an artist. His academic interest in natural history inspired him to form a Cabinet of Curiosities for which he created the illustrations. Frisch is credited by some with the discovery of the color 'Prussian Blue', and was responsible for the planting of mulberries on the ramparts of Berlin in a successful attempt to produce silk. Frisch's academic achievement 'Vorstellung der Vogel in Teutschland' took nearly 30 years to complete.

By Mark Catesby

A hand-colored copperplate engraving of a bird and plants by Mark Catesby (1683-1749) entitled "The Crested Titmous" from "The Natural History of Carolina, Georgia, Florida and the Bahama Islands", published in 1731. It depicts a small Crested Titmous bird, facing left, perched on the stem of a plant with clusters of mauve colored star-like flowers. From 1712 to 1719 he explored America observing its birds and plants, taking notes, creating drawings and collecting specimens. He returned to England with this material and created more detailed drawings. His next visit to America 1722-1726 allowed for more detailed research. Upon his return to England he created his monumental and beautiful work "The Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and Bahama Islands", which was published in London in two folio volumes of 11 parts each consisting of 20 plates...

Antique Bird Print of the Eurasian or Australian Coot by Albin, c.1738
By Eleazar Albin
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique print titled 'Cotee - Fulica'. Old bird print of the Eurasian coot. The Eurasian coot (Fulica atra), also known as the common coot, or Australian coot, is a member of the rail and crake bird family, the Rallidae. It is largely black except for the white frontal shield (which gave rise to the phrase "as bald as a coot", in use as early as 1430). This print originates from 'The Natural History of Birds' by E. Albin. This is the rarest and most highly prized of Albin’s works as it was hand coloured entirely by Albin and his daughter, Elizabeth. There were only 89 sets published. Artists and Engravers: Eleazar Albin was a German professional painter who settled in England in 1707, where he married and raised a family, changing his name from Weiss to Albin. He illustrated works on insects and spiders, earning his living by making watercolors of the collections of wealthy patrons, including Sir Hans Sloane...
