John Gould
Fine and well-preserved lithograph with ornithological subject by John Gould

1832 - 1837

About the Item

Original hand-watercoloured lithograph also signed in plate by publisher C. Hallmandel; C. E. Jackson, "Dictionary of Bird artists of the world", Woodbridge, Suffolk 1999, pp. 259-260; M. Lambourne, "The Birds of J. Gould", Milan 1980, from p. 19; I. Mackenzie, "British Prints", Woodbridge, Suffolk 1987, p. 138; c. 537 x 367 mm. Excellent quality print. Colours are fresh and bright, a typical feature of well-preserved prints. Wide, intact margins. In perfect preserved state. The panel is part of the 'Birds of Europe' series, executed between 1832 and 1837. The activity of the prestigious English draughtsman John Gould moved and ran throughout the Victorian era with a very rich etching production entirely related to the theme of birds. Part of the charm of this collection is due to the refined and delicate drawings of plants and trees that enhance the illustrations, while the occasional insert of insects helps to brighten up the scenes.
