Rough-legged Buzzard: 19th C. Hand-colored Lithograph by J. Gould & Edward Lear
By Edward Lear
Located in Alamo, CA
This is an original 19th century hand-colored folio-sized lithograph entitled "Archibuteo Lagopus" (Rough-Legged Buzzard) by John Gould and Edward Lear, from Gould's "Birds of Great Britain", published in London between 1862 and 1873. The print depicts an adult Rough-Legged Buzzard perched on a branch of a tree looking to the left. This beautiful framed Gould hand-colored lithograph is presented in a gold-colored wood frame and cream-colored French mat, embellished by a gold-colored fillet. The frame measures 33" high, 25.5" wide and 1.25" thick. It is in excellent condition There are several other unframed Gould bird lithographs available on our 1stdibs and InCollect storefronts. Two or more of these striking lithographs would make an attractive display grouping. A discount is available for purchase of a set depending on the number. These additional Gould hummingbirds may be viewed by typing Timeless Intaglio in the 1stdibs or InCollect search field to be taken to our storefront. John Gould (1804-1881]) was an English ornithologist and artist. He, like his American contemporary John James Audubon, published a number of books on birds in the mid 19th century, illustrated by hand-colored lithographs. His wife and fellow artist, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists including Edward Lear and Henry Constantine Richter produced lithographs for his various publications. He has been considered the father of bird study in Australia and the Gould League in Australia is named after him. Charles Darwin referenced Gould’s work in his book, "On the Origin of Species" and Gould named a bird after Darwin; "Darwin's finches". Gould began his career in London as a taxidermist, but in 1827 became the first curator and conservator at the museum of the Zoological Society of London. In this position naturalists brought him collections of birds from all over the world. He began creating drawings and eventually hand-colored lithographs with his wife and Edward Lear, which were the basis for his first publications. Darwin brought him specimens from the Galapagos Islands, including 12 species of finches which had never been described. In 1838, Gould and his wife travelled to Australia and their work led to the seven volume publication of “The Birds of Australia”. Gould had a fascination for hummingbirds and collected specimens of 320 varieties before ever seeing a live hummingbird on a trip to the United States in 1857. He eventually published “A Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Family of Humming-birds". Other large publications include: "The Birds of Europe"," A Monograph of the Ramphastidae, or Family of Toucans”, “A Synopsis of the Birds of Australia, and the Adjacent Islands”, “A Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America”, “The Birds of Asia”, “The Birds of Great Britain” and "The Birds of New Guinea and the Adjacent Papuan Islands, including many new species recently discovered in Australia". John Gould (1804-1881) was a British ornithologist and illustrator who is best known for his monumental work, "The Birds of Europe," published between 1832 and 1837. Gould was born in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England, and began working as a taxidermist and natural history dealer in London in the 1820s. In 1827, Gould was appointed the first curator and preserver of birds at the Zoological Society of London, where he began to build his collection of specimens and began to study the birds of the world. He published his first monograph, "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains," in 1831, which included 80 plates of Himalayan birds. Gould continued to publish numerous volumes on the birds of the world throughout his life, including "The Birds of Australia" (1840-1848) and "The Birds of Great Britain" (1862-1873). His works were highly regarded for their accuracy and detail, and he was one of the most prominent ornithologists of his time. In addition to his work as an ornithologist, Gould was also a successful businessman, and he used his profits to fund expeditions and to support the scientific community. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1843, and he was awarded the Royal Medal...

Feeding the Ravens
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Feeding the Ravens" 1997 is a color offset lithograph on paper by noted American artist Rie Mounier Munoz, 1921-2015. It is hand signed and numbered 29/950 in pencil by the artist. The image size is 9.65 x 8.35 inches, sheet size is 13.85 x 12.25 inches. It is in excellent condition, has never been framed. About the artist: Alaska painter Rie Mounier Munoz was the child of Dutch parents who immigrated to California, where she was born and raised. She is known for her colorful scenes of everyday life in Alaska. Rie (from Marie) Munoz (moo nyos), studied art at Washington and Lee University in Virginia. In 1950, she traveled up the Inside Passage by steamship, fell in love with Juneau, and gave herself until the boat left the next day to find a job and a place to live. Since then Juneau has been home to Munoz. She began painting small vignettes of Alaska soon after arriving in Juneau, and also studied art at the University of Alaska-Juneau. Munoz painted in oils in what she describes as a "painstakingly realistic" style, which she found stiff and "somewhat boring." Her breakthrough came a few years later when an artist friend introduced her to a versatile, water-soluble paint called casein. The immediacy of this inexpensive medium prompted an entirely new style. Rie's paintings became colorful and carefree, mirroring her own optimistic attitude toward life. With her newfound technique she set about recording everyday scenes of Alaskans at work and at play. Of the many jobs she has held journalist, teacher, museum curator, artist, mother, Munoz recalls one of her most memorable was as a teacher on King Island in 1951, where she taught 25 Eskimo children. The island was a 13-hour umiak (a walrus skin boat) voyage from Nome, an experience she remembers vividly. After teaching in the Inupiat Eskimo village on the island with her husband during one school year, she felt a special affinity for Alaska's Native peoples and deliberately set about recording their traditional lifestyles that she knew to be changing very fast. For the next twenty years, Rie practiced her art as a "Sunday painter," in and around prospecting with her husband, raising a son, and working as a freelance commercial artist, illustrator, cartoonist, and curator of exhibits for the Alaska State Museum. During her years in Alaska, Munoz has lived in a variety of small Alaskan communities, including prospecting and mining camps. Her paintings reflect an interest in the day-to-day activities of village life such as fishing, berry picking, children at play, as well as her love of folklore and legends. Munoz says that what has appealed to her most were "images you might not think an artist would want to paint," such as people butchering crab, skinning a seal, or doing their laundry in a hand-cranked washing machine. In 1972, with her hand-cut stencil and serigraph prints selling well in four locations in Alaska, she felt confident enough to leave her job at the Alaska State Museum and devote herself full time to her art. Freed from the constraints of an office job, she began to produce close to a hundred paintings a year, in addition to stone lithograph and serigraph prints. From her earliest days as an artist, Rie had firm beliefs about selling her work. First, she insisted the edition size should be kept modest. When she decided in 1973 to reproduce Eskimo Story Teller as an offset lithography print and found the minimum print run to be 500, she destroyed 200 of the prints. She did the same with King Island, her second reproduction. Reluctantly, to meet market demand, she increased the edition size of the reproductions to 500 and then 750. The editions stayed at that level for almost ten years before climbing to 950 and 1250. Her work has been exhibited many solo watercolor exhibits in Alaska, Oregon and Washington State, including the Charles and Emma Frye Art Museum, Alaska State Museum in Juneau, Anchorage Historical and Fine Arts Museum, Tongass Historical Museum in Ketchikan, and Yukon Regional Library in Whitehorse; Yukon Territory, and included in exhibits at the Smithsonian Institute and Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C. Munozs paintings have graced the covers of countless publications, from cookbooks to mail order catalogs, and been published in magazines, newspapers, posters, calendars, and two previous collections of her work: Rie Munoz...

Pablo Picasso, Pigeon, from marge du Buffon, 1957 (after)
Located in Southampton, NY
This exquisite collotype after Pablo Picasso (1881–1973), titled Pigeon, originates from the rare 1957 folio 40 dessins de Picasso en marge du Buffon (Forty Drawings by Picasso in the Margin of Buffon). Published by Berggruen et Cie, Paris, under the direction of Henri Jonquieres, and printed by l'atelier de Georges Duval, Paris, this edition presents forty unpublished compositions created by Picasso as marginal drawings inspired by the writings of Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon. In Pigeon, Picasso captures the delicate poise and natural grace of the bird with a single, continuous line, distilling its essence into pure form. The composition demonstrates Picasso’s mastery of simplicity—balancing spontaneity, rhythm, and clarity in a work that unites artistic minimalism with lyrical sensitivity. Executed on velin du Marais paper, this collotype measures 14.5 x 11.125 inches (36.83 x 28.26 cm). As issued, it is unsigned and unnumbered, consistent with the authorized 1957 publication format. This edition, printed in January 1957, captures the immediacy and vitality of Picasso’s Buffon drawings, revealing the artist’s playful engagement with both the subject matter and the act of drawing itself. Artwork Details: Artist: After Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) Title: Pigeon, from 40 dessins de Picasso en marge du Buffon (Forty Drawings by Picasso in the Margin of Buffon), 1957 Medium: Collotype on velin du Marais paper Dimensions: Paper size 14.5 x 11.125 inches (36.83 x 28.26 cm) Inscription: Unsigned and unnumbered, as issued Date: 1957 Publisher: Berggruen et Cie, Paris Printer: l'atelier de Georges Duval, Paris Catalogue raisonne references: Goeppert, Sebastian, et al. Artists Books in the Modern Era 1870–2000: The Reva and David Logan Collection of Illustrated Books. Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Thames & Hudson, 2002, illustration 77. Condition: Well preserved, consistent with age and medium Provenance: From the 1957 folio 40 dessins de Picasso en marge du Buffon (Forty Drawings by Picasso in the Margin of Buffon), published by Berggruen et Cie, Paris Notes: Excerpted from the 1957 folio (translated from French): "Proposed by Henri Jonquieres, this album was made under his direction. The compositions, unpublished to date, were drawn on an example of the Buffon, published by Martin Fabiani, publisher in Paris, who has obligingly authorized the edition of the text and engraving plates. The original album belongs to Dora Maar. The printing of the plates was made in l'atelier de Duval, in Paris, and completed in January 1957, and that of the typography by l'imprimerie Priester Freres. MMCCXXVI examples were printed, namely: CCXXVI examples on velin a la forme d'Arches, including an original gouge engraving by Picasso, signed by him and printed on the press of Robert Blanchet, numbered from I to CCXXVI, and MM examples on velin du Marais, numbered from CCXXVII to MMCCXXVI. In addition, non-commercial examples, numbered in Roman numerals, were reserved for the collaborators." About the Artist: Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, printmaker, and ceramicist whose revolutionary vision redefined modern art in the 20th century. Born in Malaga, Spain, he demonstrated prodigious talent from an early age and trained in Barcelona and Madrid before moving to Paris, where he became the epicenter of avant-garde innovation. Picasso pioneered Cubism alongside Georges Braque, explored emotional depth through his Blue and Rose periods, and continually reinvented his style across thousands of works in painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking. His influence spans movements from Surrealism to abstraction, and his work remains central to global art history. The highest price ever paid for one of his artworks is approximately US $179.4 million for Les Femmes d'Alger (Version O) (1955).
