About the Item

Publisher: George Braziller, New York Format: Hardcover Edition size: 125 Year: First American Edition, 1961 Condition: Very good, clean interior, binding tight (Only portions of slipcase remain) A beautifully produced oblong quarto, bound in rich red cloth with Picasso’s wash design stamped in black on the cover and spine. The highlight of this volume is the inclusion of four original lithographs by Picasso, all dated March 6, 1961, and printed by the legendary Mourlot Frères. Three are in bold black and white, while Le Picador is a 24-color composition. The other lithographs are La Pique, Jeu de la Cape, and Les Branderilles. In addition to these originals, the book is lavishly illustrated with over 100 full-page reproductions of Picasso’s drawings and washes—some monochrome, others with subtle color—bringing the energy of the bullring and the artist’s fluid hand vividly to life. A striking example of Picasso’s collaboration in book form. The illustrations are accompanied by commentary by Jaime Sabartés (1881 - 1968), an artist, writer, and lifelong friend of Picasso. This book itself is complete and in very good to near fine condition, with all four original lithographs intact. However the slipcase is in poor condition, with only portions of slipcase remaining.
