About the Item

Pablo Picasso – Toros y Toreros (First American Edition, 1961) Publisher: George Braziller, New York Format: Hardcover, no slipcase Includes: Four original lithographs printed by Mourlot Frères, Paris Condition: Very good, clean interior, binding tight, minor edge wear to boards Toros y Toreros (Bulls and Bullfighters) is a dynamic 1961 collaboration between Pablo Picasso, legendary matador Luis Miguel Dominguín, and art critic Georges Boudaille. This first American edition, published by George Braziller, presents Picasso’s vivid visual dialogue with the Spanish bullring, a lifelong obsession of the artist. The volume contains four original lithographs printed by Mourlot Frères, Paris—including one in 24 colors—executed specifically for this edition. Picasso's images move fluidly between abstraction and anatomical precision, capturing the tension, pageantry, and violence of the bullfight with remarkable immediacy. Dominguín contributes firsthand reflections on the art and ritual of the arena, while Boudaille provides a thoughtful essay contextualizing Picasso’s engagement with the theme. The book reproduces Picasso’s 1959 sketchbooks in facsimile, rendered in expressive brush and ink wash, and includes his handwritten title page as a facsimile from the original sketchbook cover. This edition is complete and in very good condition, with all four original lithographs intact. While the slipcase is in poor condition, the volume itself is in excellent condition.
