About the Item

Lithographic print / Black ink printed on 240gr JOHANOT paper. Role reversal in this melancholic version: a shark pierced by harpoons cries tears of blood over a cemetery rose. References used for this print: Drawing of the shark, freely interpreted from anonymous photos. The "doll's" eyes of the shark are borrowed from a 19th century engraving. Signature : Monogram " PJ ", stamped in black ink Date, title and copy number, written in this order, in pencil by the artist, at the bottom of the sheet. The proofs were made by the artist, in the SFUMATO workshop, in Montreuil, between the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022. The "Minotaur-Manga" series is a variation drawn in pencil of a previous painting: "Picasso Pop Portrait". We find the brutality symbolized by the minotaur, opposed by manga characters. The reference to Picasso is omnipresent in this series. This drawing is a self-interpretation in pencil and Indian ink of an old collage by the artist. Made up of newspaper photos, the original model is dated May 2013. The quote from K. HARRING has been added for the litho. References used for this print: Shark inspired by an aquarium by Damien HIRST. Fragment of a female nude after Man RAY. Angelot and heart after : Keith HARRING, Technical description* : Lithographic print printed at 6 copies Dimensions : 56 x 38 cm Signed by the artist After studying at the Ecole Boulle and then at the Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, I discovered interior architecture in the decoration office of the LOUVRE CONCORDE hotel group. I loved this work in the big hotels. About ten years later I joined the engineering office of the PARIS AIRPORTS, then directed by the famous Paul ANDREU; this period of great achievements at Roissy will remain the most exciting of my career as an interior architect. At the same time, in the early 2000's, I started a personal work as a painter. This activity became more intense under the impulse of artists' meetings in the painting workshops of the City of Paris that I frequented at the time. Since then, painting has become an unavoidable passion.

Antique Rooster Woodblock Print circa 1910 by Prosper Alphonse Isaac
Located in SANTA FE, NM
Antique Rooster Portrait Prosper Alphonse Isaac (France, 1858-1924) Woodblock Print circa 1910 9 x 7 1/8 (15 1/4 x 17 frame) inches The excellent book "The Great Wave: The Influence of Japanese Woodcuts on French Prints" which was an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1974, recounts the phenomenal "cult of Japan" in late nineteenth-century France and reveals through direct comparisons its particular impact on the graphic work of Manet, Degas, Cassatt, Bonnard, Vuillard, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Gauguin. This print directly relates to the discovery of Japanese art most notably through the woodblock prints which found their way to the West oftentimes as stuffing or packing materials from consumer goods that were being imported to the West at the end of the 19th century. Prosper-Alphonse Isaac was born in a well-to-do family. This gave him the means not only of leaving his native Calais to pursue a career as an artist in Paris, but also the means to acquire art. Isaac was particularly drawn to Japanese arts, which he collected avidly. Many of the objects he bought were eventually given to museums. As a printmaker Isaac started drawing seascapes in dry point, but eventually moved on to become one of only a handful of artists versed in color woodcut techniques in France. His compositions, generally small in scale, are heavily influenced by the arts of Japan. He printed small editions of these works. Aside from this artistic activity, Isaac was also an active textile decorator. "This mark, which he borrows from Hokusaï and Totoya Hokkeï...
