About the Item

Set of four early 19th century English hand coloured caricature engravings of horses and carriages by S and J Fuller. Presented in period plain wood frames under glass. A charming set of engravings, of late Georgian life in London, horses and carriages. Beautifully rendered images full of humour and wit and then hand coloured. Each engraving is titled with popular sayings from the time and quotes from Shakespeare. Wonderful decorative items which would enhance any interior scheme individually or as a set. S and J Fuller situated at 34 Rathbone Place, London, were noted makers and retailers of fancy goods from 1809 to 1839. Almost since the birth of the medium, prints have been used to disseminate political and social commentary. In the 16th century, the Protestant Reformation triggered the development of print-based anti-Papal or anti-clerical visual satire by such artists as Hans Holbein the Younger and Lucas Cranach the Elder. Prints disseminating political satire have a long tradition in Britain, dating back to the political and social shifts of the Enlightenment. At the end of the 18th century and the first two decades of the 19th century, James Gillray (1756/7–1815), Thomas Rowlandson (1756–1827), and George Cruikshank (1792–1878) established a tradition of visceral political and social visual satire in Britain that continues to this day. A number of factors contributed to the flourishing of visual satire in late 18th and early 19th century Britain. The reign of King George III (1760–1820) saw the revival of rival political parties – Whig and Tory – after a 45-year hiatus, and revolutions in France and America demonstrated the vulnerabilities of European monarchies. The absence of absolutism in Britain carried with it a relative freedom of the press. Victims of satire were more likely to buy up editions or bribe publishers with a pension than resort to the courts (or worse) to keep unflattering depictions away from the public eye. Technological developments encouraged a switch from verbal to visual satire, and the era witnessed the development of a social context for debate, whether in the coffee-house, club, or on the street. An additional influence was the systematisation of physiognomy in the 1790s by Lavater, who maintained that the mind was revealed by the face and also by gestures. Other important factors include the availability of a ready means of production and distribution in print-shops, new publishers, and, not the least, the appearance of a number of great artists on the scene. Early 20thC Watercolor and Gouache. 'Gentlemen at the Races, Point to Pointing'.
By Sir Alfred James Munnings
Located in Cotignac, FR
Early 20th century watercolour of a gentleman on horseback with other riders in the background apparently signed or titled 'Count A de Monthaus'. Signed or titled bottom left. Presented in fine period gilt frame under glass. The artist has captured a moment of pause, the gentlemen rider in his fine clothes and bowler hat regarding his surroundings as his fellow riders continue the chase behind him, possibly a 'point to point'. Monthaus has captured the stance of the standing horse as well as the movement of the other horses. He has used white to give light and definition to the costume of the rider and the background. A lovely atmospheric and dynamic watercolour very much of its period and in the spirit of equine portraiture made famous by the likes of Sir Alfred Munnings. Sir Alfred James Munnings, KCVO PRA RI (8 October 1878 – 17 July 1959) was known as one of England's finest painters of horses, and as an outspoken critic of Modernism. Engaged by Lord Beaverbrook's Canadian War...
