The Turkish Fort. 1909. Etching and drypoint. Rinder 409. 5 1/2 x 10 3/8. Signed in pencil. Housed in a 16 x 20-inch archival mat.
This print shows a fort on the Mokattam Hills, near Cairo. Cameron and his wife wintered in Egypt in 1908-09, visiting historical sites in and around Cairo.T hey also traveled to Luxor to see the vast ruins of the ancient Egyptian capital of Thebes.
Other impressions are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Tate.
Scottish painter, etcher, and draftsman, born in Glasgow, the son of a clergyman. He abandoned brief unhappy careers in commerce and law to study at *Glasgow School of Art and the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. Most of his work consisted of landscapes (especially scenes of mountains) and architectural views, and he is best known for his etchings of buildings, including Gothic churches on the Continent—rich and somber works with which he established a reputation as one of the outstanding printmakers of the day.
