About the Item

The Infant Christ and St. John Playing with the Lamb, after Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) Woodcut, trimmed and tipped to support Initialed in the block bottom center: CI (CJ) see photo Inscribed in the block below image: "P.P. Rub. delin. & excudit." at left; "CVM PRIVLEGIIS" at center; and "C.Iegher Sculpt." at right. see photo In this innocent scene of children playing, the lamb foreshadows Christ's sacrifice, while the clothing of the young John the Baptist suggests his years in the Wilderness. The future is alluded to in the thistle, representative of Christ's suffering and his crown of thorns; in the lizard, which hints at death followed by resurrection since it was believed that these reptiles hibernated; and in the frog, a representation of the Trinity, owing to the animal's three stages of life. The children are protected by the grazing deer, which are known to trample snakes, the great abomination in Christianity. Bibliography: C.G.
